I have just purchased a 2001 Hunter 240. I am having trouble getting the rudder to fully deploy. I need to actually step on it while I pull the downhaul line. Once it is completely down, as I sail it begins to creep up, so that after a short time steering becomes tough. Is this just the way this rudder operates? Does anyone have any suggestions? Am I perhaps missing a part on the downhaul apparatus? Any input would be greatly appreciated.

I sailed a mutineer with a kick up rudder. Ultimately, I purchased a new rudder and tiller handle from IDAsailor. It was great! Made of a polymer, never swelled, looked great, had pistons that made the up and down easy like butter, and increased my speed. I know it is an added expense, but it was a great upgrade.

The H240 has both a down-haul line and a locking lever on the pivot. Do you tighen the pivot lock? Do you cleat the donwhaul?

I had the same problem because the previous owner had modified the down haul. I went to the hunter manual and rebuilt my down haul to the original. Basically install a 2:1 pulley system in the tiller. It is then easy to down haul and make off the line on a cleat on the tiller. You should not use the tiller except in the completely down position as the forces on it will be so strong that they can break the tiller. The exception is moving slowly in shallow water to maintain some steerage.

Winkali hit that one on the head. If putting the 240 onto the trailer, I would suggest that the rudder be up some so not to scrape it on the concrete. The centerboard also needs to be up all the way before putting on the trailer. If you have any further questions, email me via the forum... I am out of town this week and will respond when I get back.
