Noticed the other day that my 240 seems to be a bit heavy aft. I thought about adding some weight using bags of water softner salt to the very front bulkhead. Also thinking that I could move the battery up front, but that would require quite a bit of re wiring and I am not sure how I would get the wire from the back, where my shore power is, to the new front location of the battery. Any ideas or comments are appreciated. NS

Did Mine

I moved both batteries to the ffront compartment on my 23.5 made a huge difference.

Me too,

I moved my batteries forward also, left my battery switch in the same location and ran (2) 12' positive cable and (1) 12' negative cable back to switch and negative terminal. Shore power did not change either my battery charger still reaches the battery location. The balance is great not only do I have forward and aft balance, I have port and stbd balance. The batteries and the 9.9 Honda motor on the same side was just to much.

240 balance

Dave, Rick, any photos????????? Motor, fuel and battery all on one side seems to be off a few degrees sailing and does not help when putting it back on the trailer. Been putting this project off but photos may motivate me. any thoughts on venting? p.s. Just spent a week sailing the 1000 islands and out a little into the lake with the family, great boat and great time.

None Yet

I could try later. It is pretty simple though I bought a piece of starboard at West Marine I think it was about 18" X 24" just small enough to fit through the cut out into the compartment. Laid down some 5200 on top of the ballast tank in front of the compression post put the batteries on top and that was it. The one thing I would have done different is to screw the hold downs for the battery boxes onto the starboard before it was glued down, no fun trying to do it upside down and left handed.

Will try to get some this weekend

I do these projects and go so into them that I forget to take photos. I installed a little differently than Rick. I glued some pressure treated 1'x 1' to in the forward storage (on the deck, against the bulkhead that has the porta-potty) I then screwed down marine plywood and added battery straps to secure the batteries. I then ran wires to the switch and negative terminal that I mounted near the old battery location.

240 battery location

thanks, look forward to the photos. Just bought 4 gauge to run back to the outboard, electric start (cheapish $$) just got jumper cables and redid the ends, same with the power for the switchboard at 10 gauge. thanks for the replys and glad you told me about bolting the strap ties first as that would have been me for sure twisting and groning :)

Ballance

I sail a H22. I have added 150lb of lead to the bow of my boat to ballance fore and aft. The lead/iron is placed under the V-berth and is removabel. This added wight has helped lower the bow and the handaling has improved. You might try adding weight (dumb bell weights) and see if it helps you befor moving the battery.

When you get your new mast, get in touch with me and there are some pointers that I will pass along. Call Gregg Emerson at Hunter to get my number so we can talk you through this. Just for reminders to you guys, if you find that it is difficult to get the mast pin out, remember if the mast is tilted you will get pressure on the pin for it coming out. Do the wiggle wigglw with the spreader bars. Also as a reminder if you find your mast being pushed forward by the rear mast carrier, bend that sucker forward or backwards so you get the pressure off the mast pin. Just had to do that on a new boat as the mast crutch had to be tweaked. Crazy Dave Condon

240 heavy at the bow?

I read this thread with interest, since it looks like my 240 rides down at the bow (i.e., light in the stern). I base this only on the observation that the factory waterline stripe is close to the waterline at the bow of the boat, and several inches above the waterline at the stern. I figure either the line stripe was applied on a slant at the factory, or the boat rides down at the bow. Any thoughts? A fellow sailor once said to me that every Hunter he sees seems to have some slight list or tilt. Thanks, Marc_B

Is there any weight you can remove?

I did some spring-cleaning and was surprised to find how much junk I had in the stern cockpit locker. I left the unnecessary stuff on shore and moved as much of what I really needed into the main cabin (low and near the center of the boat). When it was all over, the boat was two inches higher at the stern, she handled better and I gained a few tenths in boatspeed too. Moving the battery forward will definitely help too. move

I too moved the battery and added one more. I used 1/2" marine ply shelf fitted and epoxied to the hull. I also installed a light under the berth so I could see what the heck I was doing. When charging I leave the hacth open and the solar vent takes out any gasses.

I'm in the same "boat" as Marc

Our 240 seems to be a little heavy in the front even with engine, battery, gas, etc. aft.

Took Some Pictures

None of them make sense though without seeing the whole thing it seems. I'll place them in the photo forum anyway.
