23 Speakers & Stereo

Has anyone mounted speakers in the "Cockpit" of a Hunter 23? I currently have box speakers mounted on both sides of the v-berth, facing toward the companionway opening. This works OK, but I am essentially wasting 50 watts (25 per) by not having the other 2 speakers connected. The cockpit seems like the logical choice, but space is limited. Also, I have wired the "memory" circuit of the stereo directly to the battery (as per instructions). However since there is no ignition switch on the boat I have also wired the power circuit to the battery direct as well, (both are fused). The mfgr. (Jensen) warns against this, claiming that the unswitched power circuit will drain the battery even though the radio is turned off. I have measured NO current flowing in this circuit with the radio off, ergo no current drain on the battery. Anyone have any input re: this situation? Just curious!

What I did

Rather than cutting holes, I mounted the speakers with velcro on the lexan cover to the companionway/. I used a small(~3"x4") set of realistic speakers which came with a bracket. I plop them on when I get underway take them off when I finish. With respect to the radio wiring, I ran directly to the fuse box with the wire that keeps the stations tuned and have the "ignition" one rigged with a small inline switch which I flip off when not in use. I also have a solar panel mounted to the split backstay to keep the battery fired up. Gary Bridi

Speakers, yep

I installed flush mounted speakers in the cockpit of our '98 240 (in addition to the two mounted below near the V-birth). Other than the trauma of cutting the holes in the fiberglass (actually it was easy to do with a power saw--it was just freaky to be cutting away at my new boat!!)the installation was straightforward and successful. And, thus far into our third season, leakproof. Its neat to be able to transfer all of the sound to the below speakers as well---in case my 16 year old wants to go below to hear his heavy metal stuff.... Good sailing and good sounds... curious about solar panel

Gary, In your response about the question about speaker location, you mentioned your solar panel. I would be interested in seeing a picture of this mounting and maybe getting some specs for the charger from you. Thanks, John Thomas

hatch board mounting

I am planning on cutting a board to fit in the companionway area wher the hatch boards would normally be, to hold a set of small (4" round) speakers.
