23.5 trailer coupler

The trailer coupler on our boat trailer is giving me problems . I can be on a perfectly level surface with no pressure on the coupler in any direction but the lever to release will not activate the release . If I pull the pin from the receiver and remove the ball and receiver from the hitch it operates perfectly .I have used penetrating oil , lubricants etc etc . I looked on etrailer and found a replacement for 179 . Is this the best option or am I missing something?
. Some one suggested pulling up on the release two times and that was not the answer . Mike

Try adjusting the pressure on the jack. That makes a difference for me.

Whenever the ball is applying pressure on the receiver, it is very difficult to raise the trailer off a hitch. A simple way when stopped, either back up or forward slightly and then raise the trailer off the hitch. If on an incline or down cline, chock the tire on the trailer so it will not roll.
see if there is any rust and sand and then regrease. If you cannot fix the problem, then you may have to replace it. Can you take a photo of the inside of that receiver with attention where the ball goes in.

There is no way to adjust the jack that will solve the problem . I have had any number of trailers over the years for boats and this one has me stumped . t

It acts as though it is sitting on an incline with the boat and trailer pressing on the ball when in fact it is not . I can be on perfectly level ground with no pressure whatso ever on the ball it the release will not release . As soon as I remove the ball from the hitch it comes right off . I can take some pictures when I get back to the boat . It is about an hour away waiting on new tires . It is not a real big deal , just an annoyance .

I read your responses. It still sounds like the ball is putting pressure on the mechanism. When you take the hitch out of the receiver the pressure is released. If this isn't the case, well, hmmm. I think this is the case.

mmsialor;

please post photos of where this is happening. Something else to remember. I use to pull on to a level spot and stop and had that problem as the pressure was there. However I forgot to mention one other possibility which I apologize call it crs or craft(cannot remember a fiddlesticks thing).

It could be the lip of the receiver that comes into contact with the underside of the ball may have come to tight and that can be adjusted out if you will look and find the screw underneath and loosen it very slightly and see what you get.

Kermie, I know I am now becoming insane to forget that. Why do you think I called you this a.Im. to remind me to bring that special tool when I come to work on BIG FROG BARRIBIT BOAT THAT IS CROAKING.
