For those who could use a couple of extra bow cleats on your 23.5, I have added an entry on the project forum. The hardest part is getting through the foam in the forward compartment.

Where did you get access from to the underside of the deck? There are two ways to gofrom the removeable bulkhead in the v berth or put deck plates in the anchor locker. I think I remember someone using the deck plate on a 26 not sure if there is room on a 23.5.

Forward of V Berth

I removed the panel forward of the V berth. The 1" backing plates just fit the fiberglass shape from underneath the cleats. The measurments take into account the port side anchor locker hinges. A lot of the work is done by feel. Choose a cool day to chunk out the foam insulation next to the anchor locker on both sides and wear eye protection since that stuff will fall all over you. If you remember installing the stern rails, the arms of an ape would come in handy.

Worth the Effort

You'll really appreciate them once the job is done. They make tying up so much easier.

Ed I'm Wondering

Hope I can explain what I am thinking well enough. What I am wondering is if there is room to put the cleats aft of the v berth bulkhead? Another consideration would be the bow rail getting more in the way there. I'll look at it when I get to the boat, you've looked at it more recently what do you think?

Rick - midship cleats?

Rick - it sounds like you're after mid ship cleats? I mentioned once before what I've done. I hesitate to recommend it (in case it fails) but it's worked for me for three seasons now on a dock unprotected from boat wakes and storm waves on our lake. I expected to get trashed when I mentioned this before but nobody said anything. I have a length of 1/2" line with stopper knots at each end, threaded through the two shroud U-bolts to make a loop that sticks outwards. I then wrap the 2 spring lines each twice around this loop. I haven't needed to replace the line yet, indicating that in my conditions chafe hasn't been a problem over three seasons. OK, ok, you'all know my season up here is only 4 months... ...RickM...

No Access

There isn't access as far back as you are hoping for. I would have liked to have the cleats furhter back myself so I could add chocks as well but can't get back there. Any thoughts of adding extra stern cleats? But then MacDonald's U-bolt idea gets me to thinking of using the "spares" left after moving the lifelines to the stern rails.

Foam removing

I used a key for insex bolts in the drill to clean out the foam when I mounted new cleats on my 240.

That was What I Thought

Guess you could use the deck plates to put holes in the overhead to get access for cleats further aft. The U bolts do work I have used them to tie up for storms when I left the boat in the water. A while back ther was a guy who mounted cleats on the lip I think that with a spacer block to raise it up that would work well also.
