Hunter 22 punta gorda
Hey all,
I'm replacing original mast on my 1981 Hunter 22 with a similar mast with different spreaders and have a couple of questions. My old spreaders consisted of a stainless still mounting piece that wrapped around the front of the mast with two flat flanges that are swept back and two spreaders shaped like air foil wings. The stainless mounting piece became twisted beyond the point of repair. The new mast (salvage) came with stainless steel round pipe female mounts and one-inch aluminum pipes (round rather than airfoil shaped). The pipe spreaders extend perpendicular - square to the mast. In other words they aren't swept back.

Question 1: are the ends of the original Hunter spreaders also square to the mast, so I can use the salvage pipe-type spreaders?
Question 2: if not, does anybody have the original-type, swept back-flange type spreader mounting piece?

Thanks,
Greg

can you tell me what mast manufacturer is on your mast? If not, then post a photo for your mast so we can identify if possible.

If your mast had swept back spreaders then that means that the location of the spreader attachment points on the mast are forward from the chain plates. Or, perhaps a better explanation is that the mast base is forward of the port and starboard chain plates and so a triangle pattern exists if you were to draw an imaginary line between the three points. You want to stay consitent with that arrangement and continue to have swept back spreaders, but they can still be round instead of foil shaped. You just have to have the spreader roots angle back at the proper angle. If you ignored all of this and just used spreaders and bases that were at right angle to the keel, then you would be pulling the center of the mast aft, which would put a bend in the mast in the wrong direction, which would be inconsistent with the bias of the mainsail, which would put some nasty wrinkles in it when hoisted.
