Hunter 216 Deltaville, VA
There was a post some time back regarding jib protection. I recently had a new jib made by Latell Sailmakers (Ullman Sails) in Deltaville, VA after I discovered my stock sail was disintegrating. It was literally turning into dust upon contact with my hands. The new sail is cut better and has significantly improved my windward performance. I chose a local sailmaker as opposed Hunter's stock. We added red Sunbrella protection to the leech and foot of the sail.

All those who own 2005 and earlier model Hunter 216s and keep their boats in the weather year round need to check their jib for sun/weather damage. 2005 and earlier years did not have UV nor any other protection. This was done to keep the cost down (according to Hunter). I suppose they saved everyone $100 off the cost of the boat...initially...LOL. Current models come equipped with UV protection which is typically an "off white" addition to the leech and foot.

I preferred the red Sunbrella because it matches my wifes "theme" for the boat and it looks sharp. Sunbrella fabric is guaranteed against fading. In the event it does fade, they will replace the fabric.

My only regret is that I should have had Jerry Latell make my spinnaker as well instead of getting Hunter's stock Doyle...

How about the 212?

I wonder if the same is true for the 212. My 2001 jib doesn't appear to be turning to dust yet. Is the stock 216 jib like the 212 (90%) or does it extend past the mast? I am thinking of getting a larger one made, like a 110%. Has anyone done that?

About the spinnaker. I assume you have an asym, right? Is there a rear stay on the 216? There's no rear stay on the 212 and I am wondering if that is the reason for an asym instead of a symmetrical. It seems the symmetrical would just pull the mast right off the boat. I know the side stays are located aft of the mast, but not much. I read a post once that said his 216 fleet lost some masts the first time they used their spinnakers. Were they asyms? What were the wind conditions? I need more details.
