This years Rendezvous will be held in the US, as last year it was in
Canada.

There has been no date or place decided yet; this message is a request
for dates that do/do not work for people interested in participating.

I would like to put forward Fisherman Bay on Lopez Island in the San
Juan Islands group as a possible location. There's a good marina with a
restaurant, a swimming pool, ferry access to the mainland and Friday
Harbor (if you're driving) and a nearby village. The Bay is sheltered
and a great place for dinghy rowing or sailing. The entrance to the Bay
can be challenging for boats with deeper keels, but there are some good
high tides, morning and evening, in the later part of July and August.

I would also like to suggest the event be held mid week, rather than a
weekend. Marinas are less busy then, and travel to and from the event
could all happen in the same week, perhaps making holiday time easier to
schedule. I also favor the month August.

So, any thoughts or suggestions are welcome. We still have lots of time
to get the details sorted, but the sooner we do, the sooner we can make
reservations.

Thanks!

Fisherman Bay is good. The later the better for us, end of august at the earliest. We would like to attend but if it is too early we won't make it.

Hi Peter, late August is good for us. Mid week is good...stay away from Labor Day, which is Sept 2, so everything from Aug 28 on will be busy. We could also go for the week after Labor Day and the Deer Harbor Wooden Boat Festival (sept 3-5), say sept 10 & 11?

Wow ... a lot of neat boat things going on in early September!
Labor Day Weekend: to be avoided (also Victoria Classic Boat Festival)
Deer Harbor WB Festival Sept 3-5
Port Townsend WB Festival Sept 6-8

*** How about the Vega Rendezvous on Sept 10-11? ***
(Thanks Sheila & Howard :)

That's mid-week, the weather should be good, and for the truly die-hard boat people all three evnts could be attended, with some great sailing in between. Hey, I might even have the other Albin afloat by then! Better get out the Current Atlas ....

For anyone planning to come to the Vega Rendezvous, and thinking they might want to swing by the Deer Harbor Wooden Boat Rendezvous before hand, (assuming we take Peter's suggestion and go for Sept 10-11) here's the link to the 2012 Deer Harbor wooden boat rendezvous. The 2013 page isn't up yet, but it's always the Tuesday & Wednesday after Labor Day.

Some additional notes:
Looking at the Juan de Fuca Current atlas:
Sept 1 & 2 ... for the trip to the Deer Harbor Festival currents are favorable in a northerly direction for the best part of the day.

Sept 6 ... for the trip to the Port Townsend Festival currents are favorable for southward travel for the best part of the day, changing at Point Wilson at 1pm to being favorable the rest of the way south to Port Townsend.

Sept 9 ... for the trip from Port Townsend to Fisherman Bay there are 2 or 3 hours of counter current, but this changes in time for the transit of San Juan Channel.

The tides at Fisherman Bay (shallow entrance on a low tide) are cooperating with 6' tides in mid morning and again in the afternoon.

Now all we have to wish for are sunshine, moderate winds, seeing old friends, and making new ones.

I like the idea of hitting the other events first. Should be fun to do them together. We can raft up at Port Townsend. The harbors will probably be full anyway. I don't know how the Boat Haven looks since they changed it in 2010 but I think they reduced the number of small boat slips.
