Happy New Year Everyone,

It has been a while since I have posted. Had a lengthy buisness trip to Iraq compliments of the US Army. My wife and I recently purchased a 2009 Hunter 31. We spent the better part of the summer '09 trying to get the dealer to repair our back flowwing head. It seems the design of the boat places the holding tank slightly higher than the head. Certain parts were replaced. However, problem persists. They will attempt another fix in the spring after launch.

Personally, I would prefer to replace it with a Raritan head. The boat has a warranty which covers this issue. Any thoughts or recommendations are always appreciated.

Thanks,

Tom

Welcome back! As the owner of two Jabsco heads on my 40.5 for ten years, and having invested $350 in one and nearly $1K in the other in that time, I would endorse a PHll compact. Having said that, I do think the current series of Jabsco head pumps are better executed than any of them in recent memory (which isn't long at my age).

As far as the backflow, I don't believe it would make a difference. I think you need a loop in the discharge line. We'll see what Peggy says.

I can't imgine a holding tank below the head, unless it is in the keel. Don't know why we all don't have your problem.

I echo Phil.. Welcome back.. and thanks for your time there!
I wonder if the twist lock pump on the Jabsco would stop this.. You can replace the pump as a unit with the new one that has a plug that locks at the bottom of the pump stroke.. I recently had to buy one of these (two years old now) and it works very well.. I agree with Peggy's observations that the valve shouldn't be necessary, but it does seem to work.. The old Thetford that I had to replace (because parts failed two days before a cruise and no parts were available locally) never had backflow problems and the new Jabsco doesn't either.. I have a buddy with an O'Day who had backflow with an older Jabsco.. (tank above head) we rebuilt the thing and it lasted a very short time.. we replaced the whole pump with the new locking one and the backflow has stopped.. The whole pump unit doesn't cost much more than a rebuild kit.. since the head discharge hose (if connected correctly) goes into the top of the tank, the only stuff that can get back into the head is what is in the hose. If ya flush enough to clear the hose, only water can come back unless the tank is full and/or the vent is plugged. Soooo since the pump diameter is about the ID of the hose, on teh Jabsco, the number of pump strokes necessary to clear the hose is the stroke length divided into the length of hose from the head to the tank.. so after the bowl is clear, another few strokes is necessary to clear the hose.

Thank you

Thank you for the advice. The spring work list for the boat is right next to the "honey do" list.

Happy New Year,

Tom

Tom,
I had the same problem on my 2006 H31, and I ended up replacing it with the newer Jabsco twist and lock head and that solved the issue of backflow. It was only $150 or so, well worth the cost, and easy to install.
