This engine uses the D1005 block and after much research I found out the Kubota fuel filter 70000-43081 is supposed to fit. So I picked up 4 and took them down to Mexico to our boat along with oil filters too. The new filter would not fit. Seems too wide. 3 1/4 in. Touches the block and won't screw on so brought the fuel filters back and returned them. Did IK miss somethings here.

Kubota changes their numbers every so often.
Possible you got the wrong one. My cross reference list says the number you have is good, but who knows.
For my engine the OEM filter is Universal 298854
Here are some others;
Purolator PER 262F
WIX 33390
NAPA 3390
FRAM P7514
You might grab your tape measure and head down to your local auto parts store and see the diameter of these.
Hope this helps.

What do you mean it "touches the block"? The fuel filter typically screws onto a bracket vertically with fuel lines coming in and out at the top of the bracket. For my M25 I use a NAPA Gold fuel filter that seems readily available at NAPA stores. That 3390 number noted above sounds awful familiar.

Here is pic of filter I am presently using. It's from a reliable source that I found locally. As you can see there is tight quarters where there is a flange on block and the Kubota filter won't fit in here. Not enough room. I'll take my tape measure when I go looking for the next filter. I have 3 1/4 in.

That doesn't seem like something universal would modify to turn a Kubota into a universal marine motor. See if you can find a photo of the Kubota motor or visit a tractor dealer to see if you can look at one. Maybe the bracket is bent a little or maybe you can shim the bracket to get a little more clearance.

Well, the way I understand it, Westabeke took over Universal then began building motors based on a Kubota block, while still calling them Universal marine engines.
Perhaps someone else could expand our knowledge on this.

Universal always used Kubota diesel motors and modified them for marine motors. I have an M25 from 1985 and it is a Kubota block. I'm thinking the engine mounted fuel filter would be the same on a tractor engine since that is not something that would need to be modified for a marine engine. So it is puzzling why your filter won't fit unless the prior owner changed something.

Looking at the parts list your bracket uses a spacer under one side of it and two different size and length screws to mount the bracket. See if the spacer is there, that might give you the clearance you need. Keep in mind this unit does not interact mechanically with the engine, it just uses the engine as a means to hold it. You could just as easily mount this off the engine by screwing the mounting bracket to the side wall of your engine compartment. http://www.westerbeke.com/parts manual/201021 parts manual m25xpb-m35b-m40b revision 2 final.pdf
