323

My wife and I have sailed our 323 for 6 weeks now and it has been a joy. The boat was ordered with a gennaker which ads to the fun. We have been sailing it mostly for relaxation and have been in two short distance races. Being a new boat we are getting used to the sail trims etc, but it sails well. The 2 stage reef setup is easy to use when needed. The interior is plenty big for us and the head/shower is quite large for this size boat. So far no complaints. Terry

Have you looked at the OC343?

Todd, Congratulations on your pending purchase. The 323 is a fine vessel with good sailing characteristics. My only reservation with your selection is the relatively low displacement and the smaller standard Yanmar engine. While I realize budget is probably an issue, take a very close look the new OC343. This a stunning vessel and cures all my reservations with the 323. Great motoring capabilities and a great sailing vessel in this general size range. The classic main would be my choice but there is certainly nothing wrong with inmast rig. Depends on your sailing grounds. You will see better light air performance with the classic but the advantage disappears 12+ knots of apparent breeze. A dock mate just took delivery a few week ago on his 343 and I must admit that I am impressed! Jon

After thought..

One reason behind our purchase of the 323 was trailering ability. Beleieve it or not the boat was purchased new on a trailer and we pulled it to our home port, Hope Id, from Colorado where it was purchased and then to the west coast (San Juan's) for a three week vacation. Now it's back to the home port. We also wanted a boat that not only was good for extended stays, but didn't compromise performance. Enjoy Terry

Towing a 323? Wow!

WOW! It never occurred to me that towability was an issue for a boat this big! At almost 11' in beam and 8500# displacement, I sure wouldn't want to tow it very often. And then there is the cost rigging when you get where you are going. It is a great boat! Enjoy. Jon

Towing a 323

At 8800 lbs empty it seems heavy, but consider a 33 foot 5th wheel trailer can be considerably heavier. The cost of a traveling lift was $120 each way to launch the boat and step the mast. Verses the cost of a vacation for 3 weeks in a motel or chartering a boat, it isn't real expensive. Sail on.... Terry

In mast furling

I've been sailing my B361 with in mast furling for two years a wouldn't be without some type of mainsail furling. If it's a good idea for the headsail, it's good for the mainsail for the same reasons. Just makes life easier and sailing more enjoyable. No, it doesn't perform like a battened sail, but if you really learn how to set it, you'll really enjoy using it.
