I was emailed by Andrew who, with his brother, has been "thinking about the Hunter 25 because we vacation on a very shallow bay. The 2'6" draft would let us moor right off shore. But obvious such a small keel leaves us concerned about handling? What has your experience been with the boat in moderate and heavy winds?" I couldn't get a reply email through, so am posting my response here: I do have the latest model, Andrew. I'm very happy with her - I responded to questions put by Small Craft Advisor magazine which published a very favourable review in issue number 38 (March/April this year). I have a scanned copy, but it's a 2.6 mb file. There have been warranty repairs and modifications (some of which Hunter appears to have picked up on): the rudder should swing up 180 degrees, the deck and hull moulds should be bolted as well as glued and the jib furler line should be run down the port side, not the same side as the anchor roller if, as I recommend, you order both those options. Everything on my boat is fine now and Hunter looked after me very well. The shallow draft is terrific. We have a house on the beach in a shallow part of Port Phillip Bay, so a 6' draft would be useless. Good luck with your research. Let me know if I can be of further help.

I agree

I completely agree with Garry's assessment of the new hunter. My 2006 model is just a wonderful boat. The only thing I would add to the list is that the window in the bimini should have been placed further back on the bimini. I have no complaints about the boat and have had no warranty issues or other problems as of yet.

2006 Hunter 25

I have a new Hunter 25 and so far it's been great. We went through a bunch of stuff to get it and to have everything set up the way I wanted took longer than I thought it would... but it is easy to sail and has a very roomy cockpit. I think we have pretty much every available option plus custom Lewmar outboard controls on our nav pod which is very cool. I've started a web site (www.hunter25.com) and I intend to get an owners group going at the end of this summer, so we can all share information about our modifications, warranty claims, experiences and sailing tips, etc. So far the only thing I'd like to have is a larger genoa and genoa tracks. The boat is light and easy to sail, but I'd like to get some more sail up on light wind days so I can keep up with my friends a little better. -Ken

Hunter25.com

Great idea, Ken. We also need to write some reviews for HunterOwners.com. I'll be doing a detailed review when I get back on the Bay after this (very cold by our standards) winter.

Hunter 25 Bimini

Sad story (but luckily I was fully insured): The factory supplied bimini (under which, like JeffC, I had to crane my neck to see the windex through the window) blew off. I'd left it up while the boat was on the mooring because it was impossible to fold up. It got in the way of fishing - I know she's a sail boat but my crew has to be bribed - so its loss was not so hard to take. Irony is that one of my modifications is a matching Raymarine wind speed and direction display mounted neatly between the depth and SOG displays, so I wouldn't have had to peer through the misplaced bimini window anyway. (I've suggested to Hunter that they offer this as an option - it's terrific and not too expensive).
