Both won;t get cold enough, but compressors do run. Freezer is worse - likely originals from 2004. What do you all think - try to get somone to recharge or will that cost as much as replace ? Any idea how to get to the refrigerant intakes ?
Our 1991 boat came with an AB freezer and separate refrigerator. When we purchased her in 2002, the freezer would not cool, so we had it recharged. We keep both on 24/7 and the freezer remains operational to this day. The refrigerator compressor died a few years ago and I replaced it with same, DYI. A recharge should not cost near as much as a new system.
The compressors are installed without enough air circulation. Take out the fridge and the freezer and create big holes to increase air cidculation. Pull cold air from the bilge, create hot air outlet higher up. Our freezer would run nearly 24/7 because of the bad circulation. To increase air circulation I installed a 12V computer fan wired in parallel with the compressors. Problem solved.
