About to check out this boat in my quest to upgrade from my 30'er. Sure looks good in the pics on YW but would like to hear from owners on what a keen eye should look for when inspecting one, or the ?'s to ask the seller.
Any particular trouble areas that have wreaked havoc? Google hasn't produced much on this other than what seems to be flukie situations.
Would love some helpful info to prep me for this Saturday viewing.
Much thanks

Good choice of yacht, have had no complaints with my 361, performs well and would find it hard to part with as she sails well, is forgiving and is a great boat to handle single handed up to 25 knots.

Make sure you use a registered surveyor, he should pick up any problems, do not be frightened to pay for a good surveyor as he could save you a lot of money...?

I am very pleased with my 361 purchased 3 years ago

The only questions I can think of are the standard maintenance questions. When was the last time the cutlass bearing was changed, the Volvo drip less shaft seal, batteries etc?

You might want to check the through hulls - the brass elbow for the raw water feed broke off in my hand, thankfully when I was on the hard. Some have had the nipple for the hose that feeds the shaft seal break.

Definitely check the brass nipple that goes to the shaft. I had mine redone and changed to bronze. Other than that, fantastic boat. We've had ours for three years now and love it.

Great boat with few problems. Had a new 2002 for 7 years and traded her in on a 43 or else would still have her. As the others have said she's stable and comfortable but definately have the nipple on the dripless packing shaft checked. They were know to corrode and break off. Not a good thing if you're still in the water as they're no way to stop the flow of water.

The nipple is definitely something to check or I would advise you to change it anyway. It’s not a big deal and really costs almost nothing to replace. It’s dangerous if it breaks but don’t get scared that will break out of nothing. Usually you need to apply some pressure on the hose (push it for example) and if it is already corroded it may break. I know this from fist hand when I tried to remove the hose.
I cannot really thing of any particular problems to this specific model. General maintenance items. Engine condition, shaft alignment, standing and running rigging, electric windlass condition, rudder bearings and so on. Get a good surveyor to check everything.
My only complaint is the relatively small diesel tank. It’s enough for 20-24 hours of motoring but could have been better. Of course it depends on how long your passages are. On the other hand the two water tanks (around 340 litres) are perfect for a 36ft boat.
As others have said, the boat is very good for single handled. It’s quite easy to balance it with the appropriate amount of canvas out and sails well in all directions, yes upwind too (well I have the deep keel version- 1.80m with bulb- so cannot say if the 1.53m shallow draft is the same). One thing to remember and I believe it applies to all similar boats, is to respect its “angle limits”. Get a clinometer and make sure that when angles start approaching 20 degrees, then it’s time to reef. You will gain more speed and will be more comfortable.
Good luck with your choice. It will be great to have another Beneteau 361 member in the forum!

Thanks for all the helpful tips and advice. Unfortunately the one I had my sites on had an offer placed before I was able to see it and the buyer took it. The search continues!
While searching I did come across a 36 CC which looks completely different and I'm sure it performs differently too but the corrosion issues mentioned above may still be prevalent. If anyone has anything to offer on the 36 CC that you've seen, heard, that'd be great. Now I'm torn between the two models... Choices, choices.

Never fear jboffa5474, they built more than 1 361, however If i was to pick another yacht of choice it would have to be a Beneteau 393, why, the pullman berth, otherwise it is much the same as the 361. Keep looking and im sure you will find another yacht.

However your looking in the right department.

Love my Bene:D
