Hi,
Last job before leaving my boat for the winter was to close the seacocks. The one for the macerator discharge came off in my hand!
I have decided to replace all the thru hulls and seacocks but can't find the required sizes to be able to order the parts, the boat is a long way away. This is my list. I've found some but not all. Can anyone help.
Macerator - 1" hose - 3/4" thru hull
Overboard - 1 1/2" hose - thru hull unknown
Toilet pickup - 3/4 hose - 3/4" thru hull
Vanity discharge - both unknown
Galley discharge - both unknown

Hi Peter, our 1991 Hunter Passage 42 bronze through hulls, except for three that we had the PO replace as a condition of sale that were frozen in 2002, are all original. It would seem prudent to me to replace only the defective ones. Sorry, but Unable to disclose their size for lack of information. But as long as the valves still work it would seem no need to replace them. I make it a practice of working the valves periodically just to make sure they still operate. Also, it helps to lubricate the valves whenever the boat is hauled for hull cleaning and painting.

Do you mean the handle broke off? Hunter had a recall for thru hulls and sent owners of the 356 for some year models replacement thru hulls. I believe the issue was the handles breaking off, not the thru hull body failing. I don't think you have recourse with Hunter since they've morphed into another company - but you might try. Try this site's specifications for this model. If not you may find the info in the H356 manual, which may be available online.
Yeah, and operate them and lubricate on schedule.

the recalled thru hulls had a defective shaft that broke, not just the handle. You can probably find the recall notice in the 356 archives here - I think it listed the sizes. I'll dig back in my stuff and try to find the sizes - it may take a day or two. I would replace them all, because the PO may not have acted on the recall in your case.

The recall was in August, 2006. the Hunter 356 manual shows location, but not sizes. I'll have to dig for the notice

Can’t help with sizes but to suggest you re-think the decision to close them. It’s difficult for moisture/water to collect and freeze in an open seacock.
I always have the seacocks on my boat open when wintering my boat (on land). Had a broken seacock from being closed and freezing over winter when I first got the boat.

Makes sense with your boat on the hard during a winter over. We cruise year around and keep the boat in the water ready to go at a moments notice. It would be unwise for us to leave the sea cocks open in our situation.

Oh how I wish I had to worry about closing seacocks this time of year... I am very much looking forward to being where year round sailing is a reality... Geeze, that almost sound's like a song... well, for sure if I could be in the water year round sailing, I'd also be singing!

So in the case of the PNW that would be "Singing in the Rain!"
Of course, our standard mantra here, always rains, sun never shines, wind calm all the time or on the nose if at all. Just a terrible place for a boat to be, heh, heh, heh. Oh, and the only beer around these precincts comes from Mexico, so I'm told. :liar:

OK guy thanks for the posts if getting slightly off topic....
To answer some points raised.....
The thru hull broke and the outer flange fell away leaving just a hole.
The boat is over wintering in the water in the Mediterranean with a wooden bung in the hole.
I don't need advice about maintenance I just need the sizes so I can replace the existing, flawed, metal fittings with nice electrolysis and corrosion free composite ones.

Don't know your sizes, but be aware of the different types of polymer valves. Here's a link to a thread that talked a bit about different types.

(hope that link works)

Good luck finding the sizes for the unknowns. Wish I could help.

Who's looking after your boat in the Med? Can you get them to take photos with a ruler and at least get a ball-park idea of sizes?

If I were in your position and couldn't find the actual sizes, I'd probably decide what size I should have in each of the unknown locations and buy the through hull and ball valve for that location based on that. If I had to err, I'd err on a larger size, it's a lot easier to make a hole larger than to glass over, and then drill a smaller size... Of course, best to simply remove and re-set the correct size...

Wise words but I now have the sizes confirmed. All I have to do now is fit the thing in the water.. Should be fun.

Rules are good.
Ours are.....
First reef = pfd
Second reef = tether
Night time = tether
Going forward = 2 on deck

How are you going to seal it? Typically you'd use sikaflex 291, or similar, but that won't set under water. Why not just pull the boat out of the water? Where is the boat in the Med?
