Hi Jim,
I have a 1998 340 and am a huge fan. My wife and I cruise the waters of southern calif and are both in love with the boat. They seem to have a perfect mix of design and utility.

When we bought ours we elected to hire a marine surveyor and that was it
In hind sight that was a big mistake for us. I had been a power boater for 30 years and felt comfortable with my knowledge of watercraft and their inner workings
Im assuming from your post that you are not as familiar as I was
If i had it to do over again (I like the boat so much i think i will have a viking burial on it when i die) i would have hired a good SAILBOAT mechanic and electrician to look it over. They are different than power boats or cars
I have replaced the Yanmar 3 cylinder motor and replaced the inverter system to the tune of 17k (13 motor and 5 inverter & new battery banks). If i would have had a qualified mechanic/sparky i might have spent 2k but theres a good chance they could have spotted the issues. Even with the qualified eyes on the boat you could still wind up buying someones problems (no different than a used car) . I would recommend you look the boat over well, try to negotiate a price that will leave you some reserve, and enjoy the boat while you can, life is to short.

We've had our 2000 340 for just over 6 years. My biggest concern when I was buying the boat was how ugly I thought it was. But, the price was ridiculous and it was equipped great, so I figured I could get over it. A good enough looking hull and deck, but all the different shaped windows on the cabin side were just way too mismatched and distracting.
Now, I think I 've got the best looking boat on the bay and don't regret buying it for a second. I can only compare it to other Hunters, the 26.5, 280, 320, 326, 36 that I have owned or used through Sailtime. But it is the perfect size, cabin and cockpit, for what we do with it, over night or weekend cruises, day sails, and races on the bay with anywhere from 2 to 8, and never feel crowded.
Find out what prop it has, 3 blade trumps 2 by a long shot in currents and long motorsails. I have added dual fuel filters with see thru bowls, the active filter bowl fills with water about every hour of run time (here on the just slightly humid Texas Gulf Coast). I used to change the single filter under the quarter berth about twice a year, maybe 30 or 40 hours, where did all the water go then? The yanmar has had zero issues since I've been draining that water regularly.
I've also moved the batteries, just replaced and moved the charger, and plan on replacing the head this spring, And new sails, just got them, only been out once with them so far.
We've had no real problems that are specific to this particular model or make that you wouldn't find on most other boats of the same vintage and price range. Lots of photos of the boat and mods on my profile page.
Here's our great looking 340 from a race last month.
