When I turn my wheel it makes a noise. I am not sure if this is how it sounded originally (3rd owner), or it needs chain and cable maintenance or something else.

My pedestal has instruments mounted on top (depth finder, knots, compass, auto pilot). To do chain and cable maintenance if that is what is needed, how do you do it? And what do you use(spray grease or oil or…)?

What kind of noise (creaking, clunking, squeaking, etc)? Generally there is a way to access the chain where it goes over the sprocket from the wheel, but I don’t know how your pedestal is set up. Once you get it open you’ll want to clean the chain. You could use a rag dampened with mineral spirits for that. Then reapply waterproof grease. If the problem is squeaking that should fix it. If it’s clunking of some sort the problem could be elsewhere and related to the sheaves or quadrant that the cable runs over.

See if the steering cables are tight, not loose. That can be checked in the gas locker where they are connected to the rudder arm
