We purchased a 2001 Hunter 410. We have been having problems with the freezer and refrigerator since we purchased the boat. We had it serviced in September. We were told there probably was not enough insulation, the gasketing leaks badly, and that Hunter had installed a refrigerator thermostat in the freezer. Everything on top of the freezer defrosts because of the warm air coming in from the refrigerator. We need to keep the refrigerator iced because the temperature averages 50-60 degrees without it. We are in the process of having it serviced again. Has anyone else had this same problem, and was the problem resolved satisfactorily? If so, how was it done? Also, it seems the compressor is running all of the time. We are living aboard, and this has become a major problem for us. Our boat is in warranty until March, 2003, and we would like to get this problem solved before it really becomes our problem.

Modification of Ref./Freezer

We did 3 things to our units that really makes them work great. 1. Closed holes in units - Put rubber stoppers in water (drain) outlets & sprayed expanding foam where tubing (piping) goes through units. 2. Added rubber gasketing around all lids / doors. Material can be bought at any hardware / lumber store. 3. Installed one 12 volt 3" or 4" computer fan (from Radio Shack) in the bottom of each unit to circulate the cold air from the bottom to the top of the unit. We picked up the electrical source (courtesy lights) from the light & switch in the box. With these changes we can have ice cream. We normally keep the temp. settings on 2 for the Ref. & 3 for the Freezer. Compressor system only runs about 10 mins. every 2 ot 3 hours, depending on the outside temp. Also since the changes the cold plates do not ice up.

Shouldn't become your problem

God forbid it's not fixed by the end of your warranty period, but if you are having continuous work done, your warranty on that part(s) should be extended by the life of your current warranty. Ensure that it is, Any reputable dealer/broker should see to that. Good Luck.

Drain Plug

We have the same boat. Make sure that the drain plug in the bottom of the refrig is in place. If not, it won't cool. I added a strip of 1/4" white rubber insulation around the doors. I placed it directly on top of the area where the factory's seal sits. It helped alot. Available from Home Depot. Try the dollar bill test. If it is held in place by the seal(s) then you are successfully keeping the cold air where it is supposed to be. John Richard s/v Jack's Place

410 refrigeration

I had similar problem with my 410 and both Hunter and Marine Air worked to solve it. First of all the compressor is too small for the size of the box. Mine was replace by Marine Air with one with 25% more capacity and both water and air cooling features. The filter was replaced with a larger Groco filter and the pump was also replaced with a larger pump. I have also blocked the drain hole with a stopper, added foam where the tubes exit the freezer, and added additional refrigerator rubber "weather stripping" around all openings I picked up the name and number of the product off of this web site. Result: I can now make ice and maintain it---even in 90 degree weather. By the way, Hunter and Marine Air picked up the entire tab.
