My boom has 3 blocks on it, 2 are connected to one eye and the third to its own eye. I have been looking at the 2 single blocks and thinking I should change it over to a double block. Anyone think of a reason why there would be 2 single blocks? Also right now the blocks are Harken Carbo blocks. Being new at this, I am wondering if there is room for improvement here. Since I am going to be replacing them, why not do it right. Harken, Lewmar, or ... And how much of an improvement am I going to see for the $. Thanks

Harken Carbos are fine

What size boat are you talking about and what kind of blocks are on the traveler? I don't see any need to upgrade the Carbo's. They're the high end Harken line.

It is just a Hunter 27, 05. I may be wrong about the type, but I cannot find anything else on the Harken site that looks like them.

Try Garhauer

Garhauer blocks (www.garhauermarine.com) are the best value in the US. They go for strenght, not light weight, but dollar for dollar, you get much more block than with any other brand. They are original equipment on all Catalinas now and I've used them to replace the original blocks on two boats.

Did you but it new?

Just a Hunter 27? That's a nice boat. If you bought it new, call the dealer. Check the picture in the link. Its of the 27 from the Hunter site and might help you figure this out.

I cannot really get a handle on how your setup is configured.

mistake

Double blocks are for part purchase only. If you us a bouble block for two different line loads trouble will follow. The higher loaded line will cause the block to pull off center. This because the load of one block is not in line with the pad eye end. The result is at the high load line pushes against the cheek blocks. I made this mistake and had the line come off the pulley and jam between the pulley and the cheek. After this happened several time I realized there was no cost saving and bought two single blocks.

Two singles or a double?

If the four parts coming off the double comprise a single piece of rope and travel parallel to where they turn or are belayed, the double is fine; otherwise, otherwise.

block setup

Sounds like you mikt need to replace the two single blocks with a fiddle block so that your line loading is in a straight plane to avoid jamming the blocks. Look in a Harken catalog, there are some examples of mainsheet setups that would possibly be helpful. Harkens are, in my opinion, about the best blocks you can get. I wouldn't think that you would need to use carbo blocks unless you are seriously into racing. Step down to some of their more standard blocks. There are other good brands out there too, but be prepared to spend some serious money for quality blocks. Look at other boats similar to yours and see how they are rigged too. that might give you a better frame of reference.
