I have a H30 - 1975 and just installed a new water heater. The problem is I can't get hot water from the engine alone. I installed per the manual but no luck. Any ideas? Also I would like to replace the external grab rails (the diameter of the teak has pretty much shrunk over the years. the holes are 15.5" on center and none of the boat stores stock this size. Any help would be appreciated. Joe M.

Installed

Did the water heat from the engine before? if it did, and you installed all the hoses properly, it should work again! I saw this website somewhere, put it in favorites, this company will sell you teak colored plastic to replace the teak stuff on your boat. I did not buy, and do not have an interest in the company, but, may be worth checking them out. See the address below

Water heater woes

If you have the Yanmar YS12 engine which is raw-water cooled, you may not be able to get much heat for the water heater. The thermostat is a fairly low-temp unit to reduce deposits, and I'm not sure the engine produces enough heat to accomplish much even with a higher temp thermostat. It seems I read somewhere, either here or on the Torreson marine engine forum (link below)that said hot water from this engine was not really an option.

Air

Brett, I don't know the cause of your problem. I do know that water will not flow if there is air trapped in the line. In our boat the lines run up and then down and then up again. A trap for sure. I would hook up a temp pump of some sort throught the line and make certain that water is flowing. After that it seems it is a matter of temperature and rate of the flow. good luck, Mike D

Agree with Mike

You have air in the line. This is a common problem when installing a new heater. Sometimes, if you disconnect the hoses at the heater and connect them together you can run the engine and get the air out. You should be able to feel the heat in the hoses if water is circulating. Once you are sure you have water going from and to the engine uncouple the hoses and hook them back up to the heater. Start the engine and you should feel hot water running through the system... Good Luck Ron/KA5HZV

PlasTeak for handrails.

Since the company is just up the street I have purchased some of their product. I will be using PlasTeak for the cabin trim strips this season. And I will eventually replace my handrails with the same material. Two problems. One, it is not a good color match with the original and does not have that glossy shine of new varnish. Two, the holes won't match. You will have to fill and drill new holes. That's not a problem for me as I will be painting on new non-skid. I also plan to bolt-through, at least the ends. The originals are screwed into the core and seem very secure but I'll feel better with the bolts. On my H37C there is over 30 feet of rail, at about $12. per foot! You can call or write and they will send you a sample. It is really tough stuff, very workable with common tools, and will never require maintenance.
