Well, I really didn't intend to do a refit this year, but everything I touch leads to something else! Question 1) I have a leak in the fresh water piping leading to the galley sink. The leak is in the bulkhead separating the nav station from the head, where the lines appear to go into the bulkhead and then under the sole to the galley. Has anyone been able to replace the galley sink lines without taking up the sole? If the sole has to come up, then this will be a project for off-season. Question 2) Speaking of head.....it too is DOA. On the Hunter 28.5 the foot-print for the head seems to be unusually small. For those that have replaced the manual head in a 28.5...what make/model did you use? Thanks Mike

New head.

Mike: What brand of head do you have on your boat? Just replace it with the same brand/model. It makes the install very simple. If you H'28.5 is anything like out H'31 taking up the sole is really not an option. You should see if you can put a wire fish through from one side to the other. If you can you can probably pull a new hose from one side to the other. You can tie a small piece of line onto the end of the hose and pull it through. You may want to drill a couple of holes in the end of the hose when pulling it to prevent loosing the line/hose.

How old is the boat?

Depending upon the age of the boat, and whether or not a previous owner may have replaced the toilet, it could be one of several makes. Or do you know what make it is? From your description--"small"--it's definitely a compact model. If you have room in the head, you might want to consider upgrading to one that offers a choice of the smaller "standard" bowl or the larger "highboy" size.

Age and Make

The boat is an '85 Hunter. I assume that the current broken head is not original, but if it is a replacement, it was an OEM replacement because there is no sign of re-work in terms of mounting holes and so forth. The make of the head....Mansfield was the manufacturer of my dead head, and is defunct as far as I know. From the left hand edge of the bowl base to the right-hand edge of the pump, I have only 14" of room. On the left sit the head seacocks and on the right the engine compartment bulkhead. A very tight space at the base of the marine toilet I'm afraid.

Head

Groco "GF", I think that's the model, fits great and is under $150. It has a bronze base, you can use two of the original holes and only have to drill two new ones.

Sole

Actually Steve the sole of my Hunter is already shot. The previous owner 'fessed-up to a major diesel spill in which the sole was soaked with a fuel/water mixture for about 3 weeks. The sole is delaminating from underneath. We will be replacing it next season. Shouldn't be too difficult. We will have to disassemble half the galley, and disassemble part of the engine compartment and then the sole should come out. But overall it's a lot of man-hours, and we want this baby in the water yesterday! So if we can't fix the water lines without taking up the sole, the lines will wait 'till next winter.

Small heads.

Mike: I have had a Groco and Jabsco. We replaced the original head because the original head leaked. The base cracked. We originally had the Groco. The base was cast metal, that is the main reason that we bought it. A year or two ago we replace the Groco with the Jabsco. It was also a matter of what would fit easily and was economical. I see the Jabscos for under $100 on sale. It is an OKAY unit. They seem to be OEM equipment on many of the newer boats (regardless of price). You really don't have a lot choices unless you build an extension to the mounting platform.

It's the original toilet...

Mansfield isn't defunct...SeaLand Technology bought Mansfield in 1984. Toilets on some early 1985 models still had the the Mansfield brand label. However, SeaLand did discontinue making all manual toilets shortly afterwards...so your toilet IS obsolete. No parts have been available for any Mansfield or SeaLand manual toilets for at least 10 years. Your choices for "compact" replacement are the Jabsco manual, the Groco HF, the Wilcox-Crittenden Headmate, and the Raritan Compact II. None are still made with a bronze base. The best quality among those is the Raritan. However, I THINK you may have room for a Raritan PH II or Cricket--both of which are rated the best manual toilets under $500. You'll find dimensions for all 'em on each of the mfr's websites: http://www.raritaneng.com http://www.jabsco.com http://www.groco.com http://wilcox-crittenden.com

Replace Lines

Mike: I noticed no one responded to your first question. Yes you can replace the lines without removing the sole. Actually removing the sole will NOT give you any better access. I did my 28,5 a couple of years ago. The only issue I had was getting the old plastic pipe out of the way, The best suggestion from this site was PULL HARDER. I did get most of it our and replaced it all with reinforced tubing. I replumbed the entire boat in an afternoon instead of sailing in the rain. The best approach is to enter through the side panel in the head and feed the line through until it comes up under the galley. It goes through one of the ribs under the sole. Not really all that difficult. Good Luck.
