Maybe a dumb question, but I'm trying to figure why the hours meter on my Catalina 27 only has 2 digits. In the process of prepping to sell people keep asking how many hours on the engine, there is no way to know true hours. What am I missing here, why only two digits? Thanks.

Is it only showing two digits or is there only space for two digits ? Digital or analog readout ?

Usually just the far right digit is black on white background to denote tenths and all others are white numbers on black background, perhaps the digits to left are not visible thru the scratched cover ?

It is a manual meter, two digit in the standard tach. Thanks.

Ted, got it right. Remove the cover (four screws), read the tach, clean the cover, screw it back in.

It looks like there is more room to the left and that there should be more digits. Has the meter always presented this way? Do the visible digits count up normally? Maybe this Hobbs meter has a shutter over the most significant digits until a digit is incrementated and the meter is defective. Could a PO disassembled the meter to roll back hours and reassembled it wrong?
You do have a strange situation.

OK - there are indeed 4 more digits. Unfortunately the meter is not working so the same numbers stay in the same position and the white digits have been burned out so they are all black. I'll leave it as it is and keep a log to record engine use. Thank you all for responses.

You can now honestly answer "not a clue, but grandma only sailed it in the Sunday Regattas".

I find it much easier to track fuel useage than hours. No, not 1:1, but since I've never used an engine to charge batteries, not far off either. It's always been a safe bet that 90% of the hours are 1/2 to 2/3 throttle.
