Anyone out there with two boats - one in the PNW and one in Mexico? That sounds pretty ideal to me but wondered if there was any advise, suggestions, etc particularly where to keep the boat on the hard in Mexico, good marinas to stay at. Thanks!
Ann, Many great islands, ports and anchorages in the Sea of Cortez, but I would only leave a vessel in La Paz. It is cheap, on the hard, the only place to leave it, although I know Canadians who leave their boats on a mooring there. Hurricaines are a threat, but rarely hit La Paz. Great town, has not been run over by western 'culture' or prices yet.Love cruising the San Juans too, Seattle is a great town, Green Lake, and the people are great.
But we met people in Grenada who sail 6-8 months on their Caribbean boat then have it hauled and go 'home' to PNW (some island in WA) where they have another sailboat. There are lots of hurricane holes in the Caribbean - dunno about the Pacific. We met several other people who cruise boats in the Caribbean and then have them hauled and fly home for hurricane season, but not too many mentioned having a second boat. In general, your plan is fine - other people are doing this or something like it.
Hi Ann,As our cool, cloudy, rainy fall weather moves in, I've been having the same thought. The question is where to keep the other boat. The Latitude 38 people who know Mexico cruising very well consider the Sea of Cortez too cold for winter cruising. They may have a point. We chartered an old Morgan Outisland ketch out of La Paz between Christmas and New Years a couple of years ago and it was pretty cool and subject to strong Northers.Banderas Bay might be another option. And Cruising World's feature on the Bahamas last month really caught my attention. Then there's the question of what to do with the Admiral's Horse. Hmm.Gary WyngardenS/V Wanderlust h37.5
