2 Blade vs. 3 Blade

What, if any, are the "down sides" of having a 3 blade prop rather than a 2 blade prop?

You don't sail as fast in light to medium winds.

Figure a 1/4 to 1/2 knot slower.

while the 3-blade gives you more power in a chop, it's like dragging a bucket behind in light airs....the only way to get the benefits without that problem is a feathering 3-blade, such as a maxprop or autoprop....of course, the downside there is cost...count on about $2500...yes, it's all an expensive compromise

Downside or 2 vs. 3?

Turn the question around. What's the downside of a 2 blade vs. 3 blade? The 3 blade is better when motoring into chop. However, a 3 blade will not push your boat through the water any faster in flat water than the 2 blade. Hopefully, you weren't expecting a boost in speed in flat water, because you won't get it. Also, a 3 blade backs up better.

Better two-blade?

Also looking to improve backing and forward performance with only 20HP. But decided to try a Flex-O-Fold based on Practical Sailor's testing. I didn't want to drag a 3-blade around. More money but, I hope, a good investment. Prop is really heavy duty but won't no more until April.

I assume when you start talking a 2 versus 3 blade, you are on the verge of buying a feathering prop.If so, then the difference could be about $800 or more.

Very happy..

..with my 2 blade Flex-O-Fold 15+12 for my 29.5 Hunter, with Yanmar 2GM20F ,better on BOTH sailing AND motoring thanthe 3 blade fix..
