I currently have a 2 blade maxi feathering blade on my 37c the old owner said it was great for racing but didn’t reverse very well, I’m a beginner and my first trip is bringing the boat up the east river from Brooklyn NY to new haven CT, he also has a 3 blade fixed and I’m wondering if with docking and and having to propel my self through hells gate if I’m better off with the three blade?

I would go with the 3 blade for reasons you noted. Also be sure to carefully check the tide & current tables for Hells Gate, and try to time your arrival. Please don't ask me how I know!

I just came through Hell Gate today. You will not need extra power if you time your passage with a fair current. You can find very good advice for that here East River - Planning Your Passage for a Fair Current or Slack Water
As for docking and maneuver thrust, yes a 3 blade is generally better. However, for a sailing vessel I think a 2 blade is a nice compromise. I’d go folding or feathering for a 3 blade. I bought folding.

I would not change a 2 blade MAX feathering prop for a 3 blade fixed.. In our experience the MAX props reverse very well (esp since the blades rotate so that they are always working in the 'forward' direction). A 3 blade MAX would be an improvement, perhaps, but there's no upside to dumping the MAX for a 3 blade sea anchor.... (IMO......)

Completely agree with Hollyberry - I have a 2-blade Maxprop on my boat and that thing has more power in reverse than any prop I've ever used.
