We have a chance to change our 1GM Yanmar to a 2GM for our 81H27. I would appreciate any comments/ideas/thoughts from somebody that has performed this re-powering project. Except for lengthening the side mounting angle irons, it looks like a straight forward pull-out and drop-in job. Will I run into major modifications?

have conversion

Although I didnt make the conversion,I have a h27 with the 2gm20. Easy to work on, (recently replaced headgasket)good economy,(5-1/2 knots @2700rpm)plenty of power. Was recently caught on lee shore after dark, was able to power off while retrieving anchor no problem. Think you made a good choice,as I hear others complainng of low power. Good luck red

Don't forget the...

companionway steps. I have an '83 H27 with the same mod. The steps had to be moved forward about 8" to allow for the extra engine length. That in turn meant creating an extended top step. I believe there some other mods, but they escape me at the moment. The previous owner paid over $8000 for all the work. IOW, it's NOT just a matter of dropping in a new motor, but the added power is worth the extra investment. I would also recommend a Racor filter and LOTS of insulation! It is one noisy machine! If you want more detailed info, e-mail me at sailor27@worldnet.att.net and I'll dig out the invoice and help as much as I can. Best of luck, Bob

IS BIGGER< BETTER???

First a sailboat is just that, it's primary power is wind in your sails, and auxillary power is for negotiating in and out of channels, marinas etc; and a one lunger yanmar is the most reliable little sucker around and one that You can hand crank to start, whereas with the dbl lunger it is impossible!!!, Do you "NEED" a bigger engine? no not really, the only time my little yanmar was deamed useless, is when the current was exceeding my hull speed, or in storms when I wanted to motor in but could not!, so I threw out a couple of anchors, buttened down the boat and sat it out. I've owned my 1982 Hunter 27 for nearly 13 years and twice i had laid up the ship for 2-14 manth periods, without touching anything, just adding new batteries, and the little sucker started instantly always!!! so if You do WANT BIGGER, lots of luck, but it may not be BETTER !!
