Hi! We just purchased a 280 Hunter 1999, and are looking to get a dodger and bimini. We have had some estimates and have also checked hunter on line. My question is, the sailmaker says in order to stand under the bimini the main sail will have to be raised or else we will not be able to stand. Is this okay to do? He said we would have to reef the main sail. It would be eight feet in depth and the width of the boat. Should it meet the dodger? Please help. thank you Denise & Jim seedstarters2@yahoo.com

Denise, when you stand at the helm, how much...

clearance do you have to the boom above your head? Our H28 had a bimini with standing room for a six footer and still enough clearance for the boom. Our bimini zipped into the dodger. Terry

Denise, ours is zippered to the dodger too.

I think they are much nicer that way. Keeps the weather off too, not just the sun. Can't help with height though.

Denise, The original boom height on our 1986 28.5 was about 5'-6" clear so when I bought a new main I had it cut for a litle over 6'-2" under the boom and ordered a Bimini to clear that. Our bimini is rail mounted so it is the full width of the cockpit and runs from just over the stern rail to just short of the main sheet. We have a split backstay so that required a couple more zippers in the bimini and I asked for a sail trim window with a velcrow fastened roll up cover.
