Water is leaking into the rear berth along the cables under the steering pedestal of my 1996 Catalina 30 mkiii. Before I start to fix it I was hoping someone could give me a description of what is involved. I haven't been able to find anything online.
Do I need new gaskets or some kind of boots for the cables? Is it just a matter of applying some new sealant? What sealant is recommended?

Most likely, the cables aren't the source of the leak, the water is just running along them. You need to locate the source - the base of the pedestal and the guard feet are likely culprits but water can travel a long way horizontally. Attach paper towels underneath the cockpit everywhere and spray some water. As far as sealant, go with Butyl rubber.

You'll be astounded at the number of responces you receive ............ if you include pictures of the cable seals. It's a start.

I would tend to lean more towards @dmax 's thoughts but all avenues need to be followed when it comes to leaks. I've been following one small leak on my boat for 26 years since I bought the boat new.
