Is there a source for a Teak or other hardwood Tiller over The Aluminum Tiller and extension that is found ou this boat. Want to install a "Tiller Tamer" versus the +$500 Electronic in the way Auto Pilot systems.
You can find a hardwood tiller made of 8 laminated layers of mahogany and white ash for $199 on this site for a Hunter 26: Model specific tillers (sailboatowners.com) You can then mount a tiller tamer on it. Is that what you are looking for?
I got a auto-helm used on eBay for $100 but to answer your question.... I've also made a tiller for a different boat. I made a jig on the floor of my shed and glued & clamped some oak/pine/cedar stips together. Then shaped them with a planer and sander. It came out very lovely. You would not have to make a jig if you still have the aluminum tiller that came with your 26. Just use the tiller as the jib and clamp strips to that. Just make sure to cover the tiller in plastic before clamping so you don't glue your new tiller to the old one by mistake. See pics for a clearer explanation of the process
