I'm looking at a 35.5 legend that went on the hard a week ago...Theres an area towards the bottom of the rudder where its white crystilized and some water has leaked out....that's all I know...I have not seen that....anyway has that been a problem with this model boat and the other part what should I do to fix it....would that water have entered thru the post?....a guy said to drill a quarter inch hole in to allow it to fully drain and dry then repair that with fiberglas repair and be on your way....any opinions thanks...craig

Hello,
My previous rudder repairs have consisted of allowing the moisture to drain/dry by drilling holes and excavating material along cracks and in delaminated areas. Sealing and repairing the rudder was done using West epoxy and fillers (a mixture of fibers and micro-beads) Fairing the rudder by sanding is then pretty straight-forward.

One issue that I would be concerned about would be if there is corrosion in the welds inside the glass. This is a good time to determine if there are any problems before the rudder breaks.

Chances are this would not be too much of an issues considering you are in fresh water but it is something to consider.

Repair?

Is the common repair to drill holes in the rudder to allow drainage and drying time?...do they at that point inject epoxy or something else to fill voids, then fiberglas over and fair?....what would a yard charge to do this....500?

I would drill/excavate now and let it dry/drain for the next several months until it is warm enough to epoxy. A boatyard might charge a few hundred for the work, including materials. The more important question is the quality of the work you would recieve.
