1992 Hunter Legend 35.5

Hello
I'm looking at said boat this weekend. From the description, this is a very well cared for boat. This will be my retirement home with the intention of sailing from the Great Lakes to the Bahamas and beyond. Questions: Is this model stout enough to accomplish this goal? Comfortable for two, with guests from time to time? What are the things particular to this year and model that I should be aware of? Any and all comments will help.
Thanks
Jeff

Dear Prudence, send me a PM if you like and we can talk about the 35.5. We owned one for 5 years.

The boat can do it. IMHO something closer to 40 would be more comfortable. A larger boat better handles the bigger seas plus the extra interior room is nice when you are on a boat a while. Plus, if you have friends aboard the bigger boat is really nice. On ours the guest have the forward cabin with their own head.

One deciding factor for us was having a boat with a separate shower. If you are going to be on the boat for long periods of time it's a pain to get the whole head wet when you take a shower.

Everyone has their little issues (like I want two sinks in the galley). You have to decide what features you really want.

We had an '88 Legend 35. PM me and I'll provide feedback also.

Hi Jeff, I am out cruising on my 91 35.5 right now we have had such a mild winter. There were 3 other boats moored in the anchorage last night.

The model you are looking at has the upgrades from the previous year, which include some nice stern rail seating, rectangular portholes in the salon and cabinet doors in the salon vs plexi sliders. The keel is lead and all models were shoal draft. It was originally a deep keel in the '88 and 89 models. The younger sister, the 33.5 shares the same fin/bulb combo you can read a review of this keel here.http://features.boats.com/boat-content/2000/09/perry-design-review-hunter-335/

For liveaboard life, the separate shower is great and make a fine wet closet too. It has a hand held shower with modest pressure and another handheld shower at the walk thru transom. The water capacity is good for what you can get in a boat this size.

The vee berth is ok for guests for a weekend, but is too small for a week. Fine for kids or smaller couples. The rear transverse berth is plenty long and has two opening ports and two hull portholes. The OEM lighting is dim for reading.

The sail sizes are still small enough to handle solo and the boat will be as easy to park as your beamy Cat 30. The boat will sail in light winds too, it was built for the Florida market with it's 4.5 ft draft.

If I was extended cruising I would go for the '92 37.5 model, the cockpit seaworthiness and the difference in the rear cabin space would be worth it. The longer stair in the companionway may be not what you want, the 35.5 has a short rise that one can easily enter and exit.

The things to watch out for are deck delam near the below deck furler holes, ports and stanchion bases, old OEM aluminum tankage, front hatch seal and skylight crazing. The original engine is the Yanmar 3gm30 and could be repowered by now. An engine survey before purchase, considering the miles you plan to travel, would be sage advice.

Thought I'd give you an update on our boat hunt.
The boat was absolutely gorgeous! Not a mark on her hull, no cracking of the gel-coat on her topsides, not a blemish down below! It was a well cared for, beautiful boat. The build quality was impeccable!
I really thought we'd be writing a deposit check! Ultimately though, my wife nixed that notion. Her concern was that it didn't have enough storage for a live-aboard. I tried to reason with her, explaining that we could make due with the storage and live with what's available. Does one ever have enough storage on any sailboat? She did say this boat had come "dangerously close" to being the one!

There is good news, though: She wants to look at a Legend 37.5, and Hunter has shot to the top of her list! That boat had it all over a Catalina 36! Of which we have looked at many. I can't wait for somebody to trash Hunter quality to me again!

Thanks for the input. We'll keep looking, and I'll post with any new questions.

I have a legend 37.5. Tons of storage. We can store for two months if needed.
