Morning Guys,

Hope everyone has had a great 2013 sailing season. Well, we have closed one chapter and opened another in our family.

We have sold Dream Weaver, our restored and refitted 1984 Hunter 34 and purchased a 1991 Hunter 42 Passage.

I am looking to see if anyone has and are willing to share any schematics they may have for this boat. Electrical, Plumbing etc. This one is in considerably better condition than our last boat, but I do plan on going over her with a fine tooth comb. A little wood refinishing is in my future as well.

Additionally, I am told there was a factory recall on a few of the electric components including the original inverter/charger. Also, was the original battery switch recalled?

Any and all information would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for all the help guys...

Brian

Recall

Brian I read this on another forum. Granted it was from 2000, but this is what it said...

Hunter announces electrical concern on P42
(From the Hunter Owners Buletin Board)

Hunter Marine has released a memo to owners of Hunter Passage 42 owners with hulls HUNP0001J990 through HUNP0180L495, stating that certain electrical upgrades could cause a fire hazard.

Because of a fire on a 1994 Passage 42, Hunter initiated an investigation of its wiring. While their memo lists many possible causes of this fire, including improperly installed after-market equipment, they concluded that the charging leads and isolator wiring inside of this model may not be adequate for some of today''s add-on equipment.

As a result, Hunter is offering a free wiring upgrade to owners of boats with the serial numbers listed above, picking up the cost of both parts and installation.

If you own one of the boats in question Hunter recommends that you not leave the boat unattended for any reason while the dockside power is attached to it, and that the inverter''s battery charging system not be used during nighttime hours.

While many 42''s have been upgraded and no longer have the original inverter, isolator switch, or wiring, you should still call Hunter Marine immediately to determine if your boat needs this upgrade. They will provide complete instructions on the upgrade, and can help you determine if your boat requires it.

Hunter Marine can be reached at: 1-800-771-5556

Hope it helps.

congrats on the new boat, we loved ours.

I had not heard anything on the battery switch, but was told by Hunter that all the SN affected were accounted for on the inverter and the possible wiring issue that had caused a smoldering fire back in the 1990's..mostly improper installation of owner gear. I have a copy of the letter if you want. It was sent out in 2000, IIRC.

The schematics that came from Hunter were quite optimistic when compared to reality of what was actually done on the boat. Mine were all but useless. Owners here will likely be able to give you more accurate ideas.

Enjoy

Bub, thanks for the reply.... i actually read that a couple days ago which is what tipped me off to the issue. Gonna run that against my hull number to see if it was included.

KD3PC.... Thank you, we are very excited. I figured as much with the schematics...was hoping the plumbing schematic was at least halfway accurate though. Also if you or anyone you know has Hunter's procedure for winterizing this boat, I would greatly appreciate that as well. Do you have any other thoughts on the boat, sailing characteristics etc? Items to look for other than tankage issues?

Thanks guys, you are always helpful.

I have all of the factory supplied schematics, but I am in Sydney, Australia. I suggest you contact customer service at Hunter and ask them first, if they can t supply , I will copy and mail to you. The recall was simply the cable used to run from battery switch to Batteries was too small- I think I may have that hard copy on the boat.

Thanks guys, I appreciate it. I did put a call in to Eddie at Hunter today to see if I could get some additional info on the boat. I did research my hull number and it WAS part of the recall so I will look at the electrical components a little harder now.

Ejanm, no worries...let me try to acquire the info stateside before we resort to copying and mailing docs half way around the world.... but, THANK YOU so much for offering... if I exhaust all other efforts, I will get back with you.... Also, how do you like your boat?

Thanks again guys,

Brian

I am currently in the process of getting ours (1995 model) ready. Since it is new to us I have been digging pretty hard into the paperwork that came with it. I will check over the next couple of days and let you know what I have and get you a copy of anything you want.

Tom,

That would be great ! I would be interested in any schematics or procedures like winterizing that you come across. How long have you owned yours now and do you like her?

Thanks , Brian

Brian3820- I love my boat. Last week I went to the Sydney international boat show and I tell you - it sure is great coming home from a boat show WITHOUT boat envy!!!
There is nothing short of $800k that I would rather have- the series 1 H42 is an all time winner!

I suggest you look closely at the standing rigging- if it is original - it needs to be replaced. I would also check the through hull fittings - I only had one suspect one.
Check your waste tank- if it is the original aluminum- you WILL need to replace it, but Ronco plastics have the drawings and supply a great product AND great service. I would also suggest you search this forum for posts by me on water tanks- the aluminum waters tanks develop some unpleasant scum in the tank and out of the factory there was no inspection port. it is not that hard to fit beckson inspection ports, but I cover that I detail in the posts string. There are a lot on really knowledgeable and experienced people willing to help via this forum, so just ask if you ever have a question. Another hard learned tip is to carefully clean the window seals and gaskets with warm soapy water , this has a good chance of stopping or avoiding any leaks. I am sure you will come to love your boat- it is well worth investing in- the quality built into these series 1 H42's is impressive.

Brian,
Congratulations! It is a terrific boat and easily handled by a couple.
We have had a '94 p42 for 11 years and have traveled extensively in all 5 Great Lakes. I have seen about every square inch inside and out over the years.
We dock at Battery Park in Sandusky and winter at Sandusky Harbor Marina.
Feel free to contact me anytime at rich@travelingbuckeye.com.

Hi Rich,

Glad you contacted me. Will be nice to have another P42 owner to consult. I think you may have commented on my H34 restoration and refit last year. I have yet to come across any schematics, if you have anything available to share, it would be greatly appreciated. Our boat should be here sometime the middle of next week. We are at Harbor North in Huron. You can also contact me at brian.haskins@att.net. Thanks Rich.

Brian, go to the "Ask a Hunter Owner" Forum. Phil just posted a link to all the technical info for all Hunter sailboats. I am guessing that it will provide the schematics that you are seeking.

Did you end up replacing any plumbing? Thinking of replacing water tanks and plumbing lines. Not sure how to get to the forward head shower or rear head shower. If you are on the Chesapeake Bay it would be great to see that hunter on the water. Saw it for sale, if I had not bought mine a couple of years before I would have snatched that one up - looked very clean
