This came up in a survey of a Hunter 30 hat I am purchasing. I have read all of the posts regarding this issue. I look at this and do not see how
it is not as bad as it looks. The water has dripped down the Deck Chain Plate rod and has settled on the Carbon Iron Chain Anchor plate.
If I owned the boat I am sure I could not afford to have the yard fix this and would have to do it myself.
I don't own it and will only purchase it there is a chance it does not have to be replaced after inspecting it as best that a surveyor can with
the limited space and with some large surveyors discount. Is this a run Forrest run as fast as you can or should I give it a chance and pay for a rig surveyor to look at it?

Thank you to the people who provided the great documentation of this common older hunter problem.

The iron anchor for the chainplate will have to be changed.

Probably not a bad repair if it's taken into consideration in the sail price.

Having had to have this repair done by a yard after losing the mast on my H31, the repairs consist of cutting an area inside the hull liner to gain access to the angle iron chain plate holder. Remove and replace the old carbon steel angle iron with new stainless steel angle piece with a newly welded SS castle nut on the bottom where SS support rod screws into. Then remove/and or cut the old stainless rod and unscrew from the deck. If you have to replace the SS rod then this too will have to be welded to the chain plate base. on my boat the mast was off. Can be done as a DIY but you’ll have to have access to tools, equipment and materials. That’s why I left it to the pros.

Thank you Jerry for sharing your experience. I don't hear you saying that does not look too bad or get a camera and see how bad it really is. I think I'll just bundle up all of this information and share it with the owner and wish him luck. It was probably like that when he bought the boat 3 years ago.
I got lucky and was put in touch with a good surveyor who spotted it. I would have to put so much cushion into the offer for the estimated repair that it just probably would not work for the owner. I really am kind of lazy too these days and don't need the hassle. Your repair though makes so much sense that it is tempting at the right price.

Thank you again for the detailed article. It was very helpful.
