Recently took my rudder to a machine shop to get the aluminum cheekpieces off. Big time corrosion. I asked that they not put it back together so I could see what the inside looked like. My question: Is there supposed to be a spring under the "rivet" looking pin? There is none and the machinist did not remember seeing one. Would appreciate hearing from someone about this. Thanks

Re-built Rudder

I re-built my rudder last year and not only was there no spring, there was no rivet and a long groove worn into the rudder from the previous owners not releasing the clamp and/or running over to many lobster bouy's. I repaired the rudder and made new cheek pieces. One change I made was to drill thru both cheek peices and the frame and put it together with SS bolts, washers and self locking nuts. I also replaced the clamp bolt and arm. I didn't replace the rivet and this past season (my first) had no problem with rudder creep. I also had the cheekpeices powder coat painted white and they still look great.
