I've been looking at Catlina 30s for my next boat & am somewhat confused as the when Catalina moved to an open transom. Obviously, the MK III is an open transom, but right now I'm looking at 2 different 1990 C30s - one has an open transom & the other doesn't. Was it offered as an option before the MK III came out?

Design changed mid-year

I've heard the design changed mid-year; I thought it was mid-'89. (My '89 has the solid transom.) It might have been mid-'90.

Was an Option

from about 1990 - 1992 (The Mark III was introduced in the 1993 model year). You can find 1990 - 1992 C-30s with either the walk through or the closed transoms, but the remainder of the boat is obviously a standard Mark II model. You can go to the IC30A web site for a history of modifications to the C-30 since it was introduced. Steve Alchemist '87 C-30 TBS Mark II #4764 Alchemist '02 C-320 #909

As an ex-C30 owner...

Steve- You now have my dream boat the C320. As an ex-C30 owner what did you like or dislike about the C30 & why did you move up to the C320? As a little background we now sail a C250 wing keel on the Chesapeake & are looking for a boat with more headroom & able to handle more challenging weather & seas (the C250 gets kicked too much in 4' choppy seas).

Open transom option

Cathy, We moved up to a C30 with the open transom option this year. It's a great feature without having to give up cockpit space like on the MkIII for the scoop transom. One thing to note though is the aft cockpit lockers become mostly useless with this option compared to the single, full width locker on the closed transom. Everything seems to have a trade off but if all else is equal I would recommend the open transom. Fair winds, Jim

To Cathy:

I really liked my '87 C-30 MkII. However, the cruising ammenities on it were spartan, and my wife and I like to spend weekends on teh boat as well as taking a 2 week summer cruise. After taking a long look at what it woule cost us to upgrade the C-30 to what we wanted to have (refrigeration, a better cockpit table, wind instrument (which would have required a replacement pedestal guard and instrument pod) we were looking at about $10,000. My wife then said "you know, after we spend this money, we will still be sleeping on the dining room table." We had been looking at the C-320 since it was introduced (and before we bought the C-30), and really liked it. The interior ammenities are superior to those of the C-30, (especially the aft cabin, which is better on the C-320 than it is on the C-34 or the C-36), and for me, it handles better under sail (much better than the 12 sec / mile PHRF difference would have you believe) than the C-30 (especially upwind in light air into chop and down wind in big waves). We liked our C-30 and we love our C-320. Steve Alchemist C-30T #4764 Alchemist C-320 #909
