1989 Hunter 40 packing size

Is the stuffing box packing 1/4" or 3/16"? How many coils?

I pulled 5 out that look like 3/16". But I measured about 1/4" gap from 1" shaft to nut threads.

Also, does anyone have a material recommendation? I'm not sure of shaft material.

The Owner's Manual is sure disappointing. Doesn't tell you any details!

It is likely 3/16". Our shaft is 1-1/4" SS. Most recommend three rings minimum of the material. Be sure to keep the individual joint cut off center from each wrap. I now use the synthetic teflon impregnated (PTFE) packing found at most marine supply houses. Better lubricate, less drip, etc. Good stuff.
