Hello Hunter Owner Friends. I am new to the group.
I have discovered the Hunter 30!!! And now I want no other boat; I have fallen in love with the Hunter 30 design.
I want the boat in spite of its bottom issues.
There has been some work done to the bottom. Some say and it does appear that the work on the bottom was due to a blistering problem. Rumor has it that there was a keel issue and the bottom work was to fair the keel out, etc.?. At any rate, there is a spot on the hull, below water level, on the port side, beneath the floor of the shower stall, where the hull flexes. The hull appears to be thin there or somehow weakened there.
I had it surveyed yesterday. No formal report yet. The surveyor can make no comment about the nature of the spot such as whether the fiber glass of the hull is delaminated or if there is something else going on with the "pan/liner/stringer system." He said that he can’t be any more specific about the nature of the condition without taking a core sample. We are unable to see if the Pan/Liner/stringer system is flexing along with the hull.
Apparently, in this particular spot, there is no immediate contact between the "pan" and the hull of the boat so there is room for the hull to flex.
The hull presses in with hand pressure over a space of approximately 64+ square inches of the bottom.
How concerned should I be about this spot?
What must I watch for?
What should I do?
Thanks in advance for sharing your experience and insight,
Steve

Steve:

Congrats on your excitement and hopefully a good survey report.

However, I believe you're not in the right forum for 1989 Hunter advice. This forum pertains to the Hunter 30's designed by Cherubini in the early 1980's.

Instead try posting on the Hunter mid-size forum which includes the later year boats.

For what it's worth, everything I've heard about blistering is that you need to be very sure that the problem has been corrected to a very high standard. If blistering was/is severe and is still an issue, the fix is expensive.

Other owners of the boat model you are looking at can let you know if the hull typically flexes in the area. If not, you might try to fall out of love with this particulary boat and continue elsewhere with your quest.

If you haven't already done so, look into a book by Don Casey called "Inspecting the Aging Sailboat". A copy was at my local Border's Books a couple of years ago. But I am in a major sailing area.

Mr. Bryant,

We purchased a Hunter 30 (1989 ) about 5 years ago. I really like the boat - but as you might expect with an older boat there are a lot of things to fuss with. For example, "improvements" to the rigging setup other owners have made, etc.

I woul love to share whatever information we have learned on this model boat with you. However, I will be away for about two weeks, so if you post a reply it will be a while before I get back with you.

Good luck on your boat selection process.

1989 Hunter 30 bottom -- TRAILER !!!

Dear "Blueskies" et al, :cry::cry::cry:
Thank you for your response. I need now more than ever to hear from anyone who has pictures of the bottom of the 1989 Hunter 30.

Monday of next week, my trailer manufacturer must begin the fabrication of a trailer that I will be using to bring the Hunter 30 from Texas to Lake Hefner in Oklahoma City.

He will only be able to do the best he can to approximate the proper location for the supports without ever having seen the shape of the boat.

Please help me with this. I do so want to avoid the complication that I can imagine could happen when I arrive to take possession of the boat and it won't fit the trailer.:cry:

I know I may be on the wrong Hunter Chat Group; but, I really am desperate and the only good response I have received was from "Blueskies" who is, in fact, a memeber of this Group.

Thanks in advance to all who are able to contribute, thank you.

Steve
