I've got a 1990 30-2 which should be the same as your 89.
Last fall I installed an EV-100, replacing the existing ancient autopilot. I installed the control unit next to my engine panel and was able to install the rest of the gear (computer and heading sensor) as high as possible in the aft berth. There's a little space there to run the wire into the lazarette and to the back of the control unit.
From the lazarette the wire runs down under the removable panel in the deck behind the pedestal. I had to enlarge an existing hole to feed it through. Then up the pedestal and out a hole in the side to the back of the wheel pilot.
Apologies for only having this one photo of the installation. I'm moving my boat to it's mooring this coming week if you need more photos.
Feel free to ask any questions you might have

When adding electronics to our boats, deciding on how and where to run the wires may be the more frustrating element of any install.

The previous owner may have run the wires: laid on the deck/wrapped around the stanchions, through a conduit that is now packed with too many wires, or cut unsightly holes in the cabinetry.

It takes time to consider all your options. Sometimes it is better to explore out of the box solutions like building your own cabinet or wire chase to handle your immediate and future needs.
