1988 Hunter 30 Roller Furling Replacement

Hi Folks

I have had my 1988 Hunter 30 for a year now - the below deck harken furling is a huge workout each time I use it. I am also having trouble with it skipping and not rolling up all the way. I am looking at replacing it with an above deck system. Anyone done this already? What would you recommend?

I noticed that Hunter did not keep this system for very long so I am assuming it was not a good set up from get go. It's ready for winter storage next week so I have all winter to get a new one.

I just purchased a Spin-tec unit. They are installable by the owner, so that was a big benefit for me. The unit can be furled without the use of a winch. They have a large drum which provides for good mechanical advantage.

It does require that you have a norseman fitting or something similar on the forestay but that was not an issue for us.

I did not get the unit that allows you to change sails without going up the mast, but I plan on doing that next season.

I replaced my Hood furling system on my H28.5 with a Furlex 200, which is probably the model that would also fit the H30, too. This was a relatively pricey unit, but I believe it to be a high quality item and so far it has worked out well. I really think you get what you pay for in furlers.

I also looked at Spin Tec and liked what I saw -- until I got to how one bends the headsail on or off. I found the Spin-Tec way of doing this -- either going up the mast or trying to hook the sail on the upper swivel from the deck -- to be inconvenient at best, awkward at worst. If they have replaced that concept with a more conventional adaption, I think Spin-Tec would be a good choice too.

My 1979 H-30 has the hood sysem and has worked flawlessy for the 3 yrs i have owned her. Not a moments trouble.
