A sailing buddy is considering buying a 1988 33.5 Hunter with a 1998 16 hp Yanmar. Sounds underpowered to me, or the engine has to be run a very high RPM (noisy?) to maintain cruising speed. Later models have the 27hp Yanmar. Does anyone here have the 16hp engine and do you thinkit is enough power for a 33.5? Thanks!

Of course the bigger engine is going to be better.

Pete: Of course the larger engine is going to be better. The RPM's is actually a constant on the Yanmar engines. They should be run in a range of 2500-2900. If the boat is getting hull speed (6.5-7 kts) at 2900 then everything is OKAY. That is all you can really expect. Now, when things get rough he may have problems. If the boat has a three blade prop there is not much else that can be done to obtain more punch in heavy seas. If he has a 2 blade he could move up to a three blade for a little more punch. It is not going to give you much difference in speed. I am sure that this boat is slightly under powered. If not, Hunter would have never moved to the larger engines.

I own a 88' 335 with the 16 hp engine. Yes it is a little under powered but we don't find it a problem. The engine is relaible. We don't motor much because we prefer sailing. But if we do the water is generally flat with no wind. If we need to motor and the wind is up we will have a sail up to provide additional power. Overall I like the boat. It is fairly fast in the light and medium air. Sails well in 25+ winds. It has been a real pleasure to own.

33.5

A friend of mine had one of the 33.5s with the two cylinder Yanmar GM series. His cruising RPM under power was 3000 and he seemed to have no problems. He did move to a three blade prop though. The QM series generally run about 2400 RPM but they were in the early Hunters.

335 with 2GM Yanmar

I own a 1990 335 with the 18hp 2GM Yanmar. I am very satisfied with the power in this boat. We have some very swift current at the Lake Worth Inlet during the full moon tides and our boat performs well with the 18hp. I have been reading more on the 3-blade prop and anticipate changing from the 2-blade. It seems that the 2-blade has more vibration. I generally get hull speed at 2500 rpm, and when I increase to 3000 there isn't much more performance. Good Luck, Cap'n Brent S/V Elena Lua http://www.elenalua.homestead.com

33.5 with Yanmar 2GM

My 1990 runs @ 6.2 knots(GPS) at 2850 RPM with the original 2 blade prop. I will go to a three blade prop next year because it was discovered to have soft spots when I had the pitch and balance checked last year. I do not feel that the boat is underpowered.

Have your buddy think about it!

The 16HP is underpowered and should not be considered. I have a Huner37C with the two piston Yammar (20HP) and even with a three bladed prop it doesn't power up enough to come in against a strong tide and a high chop. I would recommend against the engine. Hunter doesn't use the smaller engines any longer which is probably because of all the complaints about the power. Hope your friend finds another, especially is he or she needs to motor in strong seas and winds from time to time. Best Regards, Art

Two cylinder Yanmar

Art's boat is almost 7000 lbs. heavier than the 33.5. I think 33.5 actual owner's can give better advice.

Thanks for your responses. We managed to get the owner to take us out and the 33.5/16 hp Yannmar is way, way underpowered in our opinion. We had 5-10 knot winds, nearly flat conditions and had to run the engine at 3000 rpm to cruise at 5.5 knots. Backing down while entering the slip required wide open throttle to have any effect at all. This little engine is working too hard, and there are too many other boats on the market to end up stuck with an underpowered boat. Reminded me of the Catalina 30's with the 11hp Universal diesels. Researching the HOW site, I found almost every 1988 33.5 owner complained about the boat being underpowered, so I think he is going to pass on this boat. Thanks again for all your help.a
