We sailed on the 27' Oday last Sunday. It is a 1987 model. I had previously said it was a 1972. We sailed quite awhile in it. Owner has added compass, VHF, stereo system, trip log. Lines and sails and outside of boat look in real good condition. Inside has been well taken care of. There are some stains by the windows that he said were there when he bought it and he just never tried to get rid of them, afraid he'd make them worse. It seems to be a carpet like surface. what would I do to clean them? He is wanting about $15,000 for it. 9.9 hp Johnson motor. Is that a good price? He will spend a day with us transporting it from one lake to another about 100 miles apart, so we understand how to dismantle the mast, trailer and remount mast.

Its in the park

$15k is in the park for a 272, though around here its probably a little high for an outboard model. Next up is to have the boat surveyed. You cannot know what the real condition of the boat is without a professional look at it to determine deck condition etc. Look for someone with NAMS certification and get the survey done. The surveyor will give you a better idea of how this boat compares to the market. Justin - O'day Owners' Web

Had an 1987 272

For the boat and Trailer I would say this is not bad. Had a 272 for 10 years and loved it .Could never find anything to take stains out of headliner. I agree with Justin contact a surveyor for a report on the condition. Good luck

The price...

...is kind of steep for an outboard model unless it comes with a trailer. Even then, you have to figure how often you're going to use that. Unless the trailer is fairly new, you'll have to figure in maintenance on it as well as the boat. As far as the stains go, they are easily removed with some stuff called "Spot Shot". Spray on and scrub with a brush, stains disappear without a trace. If you're dead set on an outboard model and you're ready to make a move, a survey would be the next logical step. I'd low-ball him on the price first, though, because an outboard model just isn't as desireable as an inboard. But then, that's just the kind guy I am. Here's the linkage to my web page. If there's any way I can help, e-mail me. Cheers, Bob

Bob, Where do you get Spot Shot?

I've got some stains on the headliner that I want to clean now that I've rebedded the stanchion bases. Thanks, Tom

A little steep

I've never sailed a 272 -- I have a 27 & it's about 1500 lb heavier with a faster PHFR. I've seent he interior of the 272 -- nice -- I've seen them listed in the 15,000 ballpark, but I honestly never thought that they were worth it -- outboard is a big minus -- battery charging, following sea, etc. Good Luck PS -- you can get the older O'Day 27 in the ballpark of $5 - 8 thousand.

272

I recently sold my 272 with Westerbeake inboard engine for $11,500 without a trailer. I had replaced the original sails with new, added GPS, Bimini, folding prop, 2nd battery. I personally would not buy a 272 with an outboard engine but then again I've never sailed on a lake so it might be fine.I never considered the boat to be trailerable though, I don't think it is easy at all to drop the mast and put it back up but I could be wrong on that.

I think you're probably right, Joe..

I don't consider the 272 a trailer sailor either. I look at the trailer as something store the boat on at haul-out and take a short distance trip to the house. Saves on marina storage and transport fees. Cheers, Bob
