1986 H34 Toilet Identification

I cannot find any identification for my toilet and need some assistance. See attached pic. I have a leak at the base of the hand pump and figure I need to replace a gasket. Worse case I guess I could make-a-gasket, but I prefer to use correct parts if available.

Thanks Much.

John

A lower side photo would be helpful. Any manufacturer marking? The handle style looks like a Raritan PHII manual toilet.

It looks just like mine when I took Peggie's suggestion and upgraded the pump and base to a Raritan PH II.

When I match up the design of the plunger it still looks like an early Raritan PHII manual toilet model. Suggest contacting Raritan macm@raritaneng.com to confirm. I am assuming you plan to purchase replacement joker valve.

What advantages does the upgraded pump and base provide? Where did you source the parts?

Thanks

Nearly the same price as the repair kit alone of my old Sealand or maybe Jabsco. Double the piston diameter. I could still use my old bowl. Easily available parts. I found it all on line. Check Amazon. Seemed like a good idea. It's been reliable for many years.

Thanks. It appears I have the PHII, so no need to upgrade, unless I go electric. For now, I'll just replace the gasket.

It is indeed a Raritan PHII. It's not likely to be original to your boat...The OEM toilet on Hunters are Jabsco. Nor does it appear to be an "older version"...it' pre-dates the PHII SuperFlush version but not by much...the shroud cover is just missing from the base. However it does appear that a previous owner made the mistake of adding a motor to it, then either saw the error of their ways (adding a motor to a PHII turns the best manual toilet on the market into the poorest excuse for an electric toilet 'cuz it only replaces the pump HANDLE) and removed it or the next owner did.

What advantages does the upgraded pump and base provide?

Raritan redesigned the base a few years ago to change the mounting bolt pattern to make it a "plug and play" replacement for the Jabsco and other manual toilets and renamed it the PH SuperFlush Raritan PH SuperFlush Promo Sheet It still uses the same PHII pump that has been the top rated manual toilet since Raritan introduced it in 1983...This is the owners manual for it. Raritan SuperFlush Owners Manual It only needs to be kept well lubricated, a new joker valve annually, and a rebuilt kit (PHIIRKC--about $60) installed about every 5-6 years to provide at least 20 years of reliable trouble-free service with minimal repairs needed.

As for what makes the PHII a better toilet... Because the diameter of the piston of the PHII is 2 1/2 inches, whereas the diameter of the piston of most other manual toilets is 1 3/4", the PHII will pump twice as much per stroke than it's competitors will. The lever pump handle reduces the amount of effort required, so you only have to pump half as many times to flush it.

About that leak at the base of the hand pump...check the pump housing for a hairline crack. Easiest way to do that: put some red food coloring in a quart of water and flush it. No red stain on the pump housing, no crack. If you don't find one, instead of opening the pump to replace one gasket, then again to replace the joker valve, and again to replace the flapper valve... I'd spend the $60 for the rebuild kit and be done with with all of 'em except for a new joker valve annually for another 5-6 years. It's prob'ly due for a rebuild kit anyway. If you do find a crack, Defender has a replacement pump housing for $69. You'd still need the rebuild kit, but the total is half the price of a new pump assembly.

I just checked on the rebuild kit. It lists two different kits for PHii, pre '92 and post '92 manufacturing. How can I tell which one I have?

Thanks.

Go to this page on the Raritan website: Identify Your Head

Click on the PHII toilet ...it'll seem like it didn't bring up anything but it did...scroll down till you get to two photos showing the locations of two of the different parts (they aren't the only ones, just the easiest to check) and the "identifier" directly below them. Part # 23 in the exploded drawing on page 8 in the owners manual will be the 1214w...the older 1213w is in the same place. Compare to the photos to know which kit to buy.

This has created enough to confusion among PHII owners for the last 29 years that I've often wondered why they didn't just name the post '92 pump PHIII.

This is the image you need to determine if yours is pre-‘92 or post-‘92….

Pre’92 or

The PHII manual head is superior IMHO to the Jabsco. I have had both, and find the Raritan to pump significantly better. I did a full rebuild on my 1988 O’Day 322 Raritan head and she works great.
