Am thinking about buying a 1986 catalina and am looking for the knockoffs on it. What to look for and what to check on a visit. Any help is appreciated.

1986 Catalina

Hi Bob - I had a 1986 C36, a similar boat. Things to check for are that the boat has the engine harness upgrade (if there is a voltmeter instead of an ammeter it's been upgraded), check that there are no pinhole leaks at bottom of fuel tank (look for any diesel residue in bilge), engine exhaust elbow condition (check for any exhaust smell in aft cabin after running engine), possible hull blisters at haulout (don't worry so much about the "Catalina smile"), and check the condition of outhaul (may need a re-work). These are the things specific to that vintage Catalina that I can think of offhand. Other general considerations are evidence of water damage inside (around portlights), head hoses, etc. Best of luck! Trevor

Trevor has good points, but...

Trevor is right on, but the problems he raises aren't reasons to reject the boat, just good reasons for a lower price, particularly if you are a do-it-yourselfer. The exception would be an extremely bad case of blisters involving hull delamination, etc. I've dealt with the first three items myself and any boat of that age has had the issues and been repaired or upgraded or will need to have the repairs done at some point in the near future. As I recall, the wiring harness is in the range of $100 or so for the upgraded harness, a new fuel tank is under $300 (about $75 if repairable) and the exhaust elbow varies from under $100 (the pipe is cheap, the high-tech insulating wrap is expensive) if you make your own from black iron pipe to something between $100-$200 if you buy a new stainless steel one from Catalina. Note that you'll find info on all of these repairs on this site if you search the archives. These are all do-it-yourself costs. If you're bargining down a selling price, you want to use what a boatyard would charge, so get some estimates. Blister repairs can go from almost nothing to thousands of dollars, so that would be my main concern.
