its just too big and in the way. and it seems like it would make a nice extra berth if you could lower it to meet the settee cushions. anybody done this? got pics?

1986 40' Hunter, anyone removed that big 2 leaf table & replace with Convertible dinette?

looking to make it convert to 2 doubles! I'm sure there's something that can be done...
I'm still investigating but will definitely do something.. I had 8 people on my boat at anchor for 2 days ... aside from 2 people sleeping on the floor we had a great time!

and if you decide to go that route take a look at the layout of later H40's, maybe '88 to '90. They've got the dedicated dinette but I don't know if it lowers down to convert.
Whenever I get around to fooling with ours (an '85) I'm going to reshape the table a bit and round the corners and trim the aft edge back a bit to make getting around it easier.
As far as making the berth into a double, I'm going to make a fold up leaf that will be hinged fore-and-aft along the lip of the settee. This would turn it into a very tight double or a palatial single. The biggest reason I'm going to do this though is that the table will make an effective "lee cloth." Having an easy-to-set-up sea-berth is far more important to us than having that 7th or 8th berth only used once in a blue moon.
Having said all this, whether or not your mod makes sense will depend on how you use your boat. I don't think we've ever spent the night with eight people on board. Whatever you do, be sure to take lots of pictures and share with us. Good luck!

8 people on board - was 4 adults and 4 kids. I agree with the corners
of the table... they need rounding... Had that a few times last summer. Was lots of fun for the kids. Its a big roomy boat
BTW Vinny i read one of your earlier post on insulating the icebox with 1/2 styrofoam. What did you use - Home depot blue stuff? How did you afix it ? Glue or doublesided tape ?
I expect I'll duct tape it in the corners to "seal" them

great question. i completly removed mine for a few months, and it really opened up the area. consider3ed getting some tv tables to use instead.also tried taking off the port side and just having one leaf, but it looks better removing the whole thing.
I completely removed the "oversized" table from my 2004 H386. When I finished I still had a SS sleeve with two flanges mounted on the compression post (it had held the old table in place). I drew and cut out some construction paper with new templates for two new tables. One would be a lower "cocktail" table on the lower flange and a normal height smaller table (single use) on the upper flange. Bought a 9 ft teak plank and had the lumber yard cut and glue the pieces together so to cut out new tables per my templates. Did the finish work on them at home. Bolted steel supports (1" x 16" x 1/4") on the flanges, routed the bottom on each table to accept the steel support and screwed them in place. The upper table "surrounds" the compression post and now we have open setting, two nice cocktail tables and a larger looking salon. I can send pictures if you'd like to see.
