Hunter 40 Chicago
Hi - I am new to the forum, and (hopefully) about to buy a 1985 Hunter 40. I viewed the boat today and it appears to be in excellent condition. I will have it surveyed, but did notice a somewhat jagged weld seam along the top of the keel on both sides. The owner stated that it is totally normal, and is where the iron keel attaches to the fiberglass, but I was wondering why they didn't make it a nice clean straight seam. I don't remember seeing a keel seam like this, so I was hoping someone on the forum could let me know if this is something to walk away from. I've attached a photo of the seam.

I really appreciate your help!!

I am pretty sure that is a bilge pocket that goes into the keel.. part of the hull that fits into the cutout in the keel top. What looks like a really bad weld is caulking .. Most folks will sand this smooth and or fair it in with epoxy fairing compound.. The sides of the pocket are fiberglass.. the "plate" that looks welded onto the keel.. is the side of the pocket . Your joint looks good and tight even if a bit rough, since there is no rust or water dripping out

Cool Boat ! I lusted after one for a few years .. like the grown up sister of the 31's and the 34's. I have never sailed one but have been inside.. I like the interior.. nice big owners cabin. Good Luck, CBrooks
