I am not new to boating but new to sailboats. My wife bought a 1985 Catalina 25 for Christmas for $1000. I am a car dealer and know how to describe pretty good. Below is a description of the boat: Boat has been sitting in fresh water for 10 years and has not been moved. The boat was in BRAND NEW condition when it was parked. Does not look brand-new now. Hull is perfect and gelcoat is not hurt. Bleach and a good buff will bring it out. Interior will be in excellent shape after I remove the 5 tons of mud brought in by dirt-daubers and wasps. Removable carpet will have to be thrown away. Seat cushions need aired out but look fresh. All wood is in good shape but needs heavy cleaning. Interior is very dry with no leaks over the years. Rudder and tiller are missing. Needs two new batteries. Needs a port-a-potty. Needs sail and all cables (I think this is called "rigging"). Needs motor. Small tube railing around cockpit area is broken and needs replaced. Here are my questions? Is this boat worth restoring? Approx. how much will it cost to get the above listed missing items? Any post will be appreciated.

Right price (gotta wanna boat

Structurally sound, parts are available - bargains can be had (e.g. used sails). If you want a boat and don't mind the work getting her ready during this offseason, you have a keeper. Good Luck! Tim Brogan April IV C350 #68 Seattle

C25 Info

Barry, Congrat's on the C25 purchase, it's a good boat. As for your questions... A new rudder and tiller...around $500.00. 2 batteries...$100.00 port-a-potty...$70.00-140.00 New Main...$600.00-700.00 New Jib...$600.00-700.00 New Motor...$2,000.00-2400.00 Stern Pulpit...Not sure...few hundred??? Running rigging...few hundred Standing rigging...$500.00-$600.00 Is the boat worth restoring?...Well, I guess it depends on if you want to turn a profit or simply just enjoy the boat. If you plan on doing anything with this boat, I strongly urge you to get over to the Catalina 25 National Association and post any question you have on the C25 Sailor's forum. You won't find a bunch of sailors more helpful and friendly than those at the association. Click on the "Related Link" below to take you to the Sailor's Forum at the National Association. Good Luck.

More C25 Info

Barry, The good thing about the C25 is that replacement part are readily available through a variety of resources. Not only can you still get parts from the factory, there is also an excellent comapny out there called Catalina Direct that can supply you with just about anything you need for your boat. I recommend purchasing their handbook/catalog for the C25. In it you'll find just about every part you might need. They also have a very knowledgeable and can answer just about any question you may have. Click on the related link to take you to "Catalina Direct" And don't forget to visit the Catalina 25 Association. You'll be glad you did.

Good Deal

I just bought a 1973 Catalina 22 for $1,500, and feel like I stole a boat. One thousand dollars for a 25 that has a mast and a boom is a great deal! A 1988 Catalina 25 usually sells between $5,000 and $12,000. The fun has just begun; learn to sail her.

Blisters?

As "Boat has been sitting in fresh water for ten years and has not been moved" I would suspect blisters on the bottom. Have you hulled this vessel and checked below the water line? You could be spending a lot of time repairing blisters, not to mention, that the boat will have to stay high and dry for qiute some time to properly dry out. Bottom paint can hide blisters. So, unless you have done so already, I would see if at least you could have a surveyor check the hull for moisture content, They have a device to do this and if that is the only request, it may not be expensive to do so.
