I'm trying to repair/replace the ceiling inserts on the port and starboard side of the cabin ceiling that have begun to chip away. The 1/4-inch ply is in too bad shape to be just repainted, so I'm thinking of covering it with a Formica to match. Is the interior of a 1984 Hatteras white or just a white color. I got a sample of Formica 932 antique white, but it looks a little too off from the remaining surface of the ceiling panels. Any help would be appreciated.

Mike.
in 1984 the panels may have started as Hatteras white, but since exposure to the elements and reflective UV they have likely transitioned over the past 40 years towards Beige

Here are some Aged Whites to explore.

Hi Mike,
Several years ago I had the same problem on my 34. Rather than paint and try to match the color, I removed the ply entirely, leaving the ceiling lamps wires dangling until job completed. I took the plywood sheets home and recovered with white naugahyde which I glued on. I wrapped the sides around and glued that too. Made small slits for the wires where the lamps go and re-installed the now covered plywood sheets followed by the ceiling lamps. Now has been more than 10 years and it's still in really good shape. Good luck with your project.

I was thinking about that option but got sidetracked by formica. I just ordered 4 yards from Sailrite of an EverSoft™ Smooth Indoor/Outdoor White 54" Vinyl Fabric. I think it will be great. Thanks for reminding me of the option.

Interesting.. My panels are a kind of fiberboard and the visible surface is a bit more white than the liner gelcoat. I have a couple of spots where the original coating is flaking off and I am thinking of painting the panels with something a bit more toward beige for a little different look.. kinda like a beige non skid panel looks fine on deck with the white gel coat.
Thanks, John and Claude for those notes..
Good luck, Mike ! Let us see how it comes out, please.
