After looking at many boats, I'm close to making the decision to purchase a 1984 34' Hunter Sloop. Everything looks good except that the sole has had some water damage from possibly the bilge pump not working properly. The pump has been repaired but not without sole damage. I've attached a picture and hope someone will tell me whether or not this is easily repaired. Any advice would be appreciated. I'm a first time buyer. Thanks for your help. Joseph

If the floor is solid....

Joseph: If the backing is solid and only is discolored from the water here is an option. Many times the entire floor is rotten and needs replacing. This is not an easy job on these boat, because much of the interior will need to be removed to accomplish the task. I would get a professional estimate for a professional replacement and use this a a guide to the actual cost.

I just did my 25.5

I just did my Hunter 25.5. It took a few days. Most of the everything had to come out. Good and bad. It all came out and got cleaned ( 20 plus years of dirt) and put back in after the new sole was put in . I was a little wary of doing it but it was easy to take it all out. Be carefully and use existing floor as a template. Teak Holly Teak floor came from Marine Lumber supply in Charleston South Carolina. Talk to Matt. Tell him Clif sent you. Great guy and has everything you will need !!

Sole replacement

Looking at the photo supplied in my original post, if the teak is still solid can the floor be salvaged? I will get a professional to come in to assess the repair need and cost. I'll subtract the repair cost from the asking price in my offer. Joseph

Refinishing Sole

Joseph, If the structure of the cabin sole boards IS OK, then you may be able to just refinish them. I just recently refinished mine (1990 H-33.5) by sanding them (at home) with a palm sander. On one that was in bad shape (the smallest sole board near the compression post)I sanded it down to bare teak & holly wood and put a sealer on it. The other sole boards were just lightly sanded. I then put on two coats of Ultimate Sole finish. Used a foam brush and worked slowly and steadily. I thought it came out great.

My new floor

Joseph, I replaced my galley floor (1983 Hunter 31) last November. I found the floor was in much worse condition once I'd removed it. If there's any softness at all to your floor now, I'd recommend you plan on replacing it. I opted for a different floor, the photos of which you can see at the link below...
