I made an offer on a 84 Hunter 34 and it has been accepted I will be getting it surveyed. Can anyone give me tips on what I should keep a look out for, that might be over looked as far as its condition. I will have it pulled from the water and have the conditon of the hull looked at also. I sailed years ago while stationed in San Dieg0 and really liked it , but never owned a sail boat had plenty of friends that own them, recommedations and tips are appreciated.

Where to begin, I have grown to love my old boat but maybe its because I've spent so much time fixing her up that I feel part of it. Don't get me wrong, she's fast, pretty and my wife likes her. A perfect mistress. So, if I was looking at a 34 today, this is what I would look for.

1. Check that the mast is not sinking into the boat. The mast support post tends to rot as it is a teak wrapped soft wood. It will be a little obvious as the deck will have a slight depression or there will be water stains perhaps near the top of the post.

2 Its an iron keel, check it for corrosion and rust. I just cleaned filled painted faired mine and its not cheap and not especially fun.

3 See if the forward stateroom door closes properly. I've read that flexing in heavy seas can distort the cabinetry so things don't fit quite right.

4 Make sure your surveyor brings along his snake inspection camera and have a look at the angle iron chainplate anchors buried in the stringers at the end of those stainless rod passing through the saloon.

5 If she has the original winches, they will probably be Maxwells which mechanically they may be okay, but they are small and with anything bigger than the stock headsail, I don't think they are big enough...plus the original winch handles may be long gone and the standard handles that fit every other winch on the planet will not fit properly. If you have the originals, they are gold. Don't lose them as Maxwell is out of the sheet winch game.

There are other things to look for and if you do a search on this site lots of them will come to light. Cheers and good luck.

This is an excellent point - I'm having this exact problem with my H34 right now. I suspect I'm going to end up with new winches next year instead of the Autohelm that I want.

One thing to add, have him closely inspect the rudder bearings. I've heard this to be an issue and it came up on our survey. If you're looking for more thoughts on the H34 there is a review on Practical Sailor.

I just got my '87 H34 last November. Hull blistering is probably an issue. I took care of the blisters and keel this Spring before going in the water. Check out the minor issues thread on this forum.

Looks a great spec. Someone has cared for this boat! and spent a lot of money.
Mine has the original wooden mast support and is still perfect. ( I have rerouted the cables)
The keel was rusty but back to bare steel with angle grinder and coated with epoxy 7 years ago.
Lots of sail area so goes well in light winds, just reef down early. Whats the problem?
Lots of boat for the money in my opinion

Just another area to check. Is you gally floor showing any softness or rotting of the base of the panel (brain freeze on correct word) that fronts the icebox. If so you may have a leaking cockpit drain. Several H 34 have had problems with the original fitting of the drain tube exiting the stern of the boat. Simply was a poor job of installing and sealing. I only experienced water when I was on a starboard heel of 15 or more degrees.

Surveyed and sailed wow what an experience. I learned a lot about the boat. It took almost 8 hours for the survey. A few minor correction to be made, I told surveyor what was the suggested areas he assured me those things would be looked at. I follwed him closely he did a terrific job making sure I seen and understood every item he checked. After we pulled the boat from water and checked the hull he was extremely impressed with it. He told me that the boat was in great shape. He will send me the report after the oil analysis is complete. I think the survey value will be consideratly more than the purchase price. Thanks again for all the help.
