I have been told there is plywood between the hull and the liner. It gets water logged and starts to smell. I was told to mix water and vinegar together and put it at the lowest point I could and go sailing. Then the water and vinegar needs to drain.
When I drilled that hole 2 gallons of water came out even before I used water and vinegar mixture. After I shared this photo with others they told me to make the hole bigger. Hope this helps.
I went to the factory when we had just bought ours. I saw them laying up in the molds. The hull is solid fiberglass with thickness increasing to 1 3/8" at the very bottom. The deck has little squares of plywood coring except where I have discovered on my own boat is foam core right below the mast step (below an aluminum plate). There is (was) a piece of plywood under the inner liner at the bottom of the sump. Much has been written about cutting the bottom of the sump area out which removes that rotten piece of wood and exposes the top surface of the hull in order to completely evacuate all water that drains to the bottom of the boat.
Thanks, everyone. Very useful input. I need to drill the hull to install a thru-hull/seacock for A/C, I'm also dealing with a smell from don't-know-where.
